Hey I wrote a big fat blog post about a part of game design that I think is really interesting.
Please alert me if I've turned into a cocky douche yet.

I'm having trouble explaining the timeline thing. This isn't a story-heavy game, so there's only a few lines of dialogue here n there.
My problem right now is: How do I explain this particular scene?

You're from timeline A, and the future-dudes are from timeline B. But they don't know that, so I can't have someone just say it. I need to have the exposition scene from Back to the Future 2, but in a fast-paced, loud, dumbass videogame.

It's hard!

I know! I've deliberately made a game in which I can't afford the break of pacing to explain any of it  Screamy

Links to what? I can't link to the game.

The things I mentioned in the blog post were the audio-commentaries on the DVD of Hot Fuzz (making smart comedy), and the audio-commentaries on all the games in The Orange Box (directing people's attention in games). I didn't read any articles.

I'm thinkin of making this level be a timeline in which giant crabs don't attack- but instead dinosaurs have attacked. Dinosaurs that are half-dinosaur half-military vehicles.

Ideally I want the boss to be 2 little chubby T-rexs riding double-dash on a velociraptor, and one of them's firing missiles at you.

Let's think about it.
You task is to show that those 2 guys are from another branch of time. And they think that THEIR branch is correct.
Well, take it:
Quote
And how YOU escaped Trex attack, when you pick-up Mighty Gun?
It's question from alternative guys to player, which hasn't Trex attack. Player has Shark attack - difference in details in SAME situation make you think about alternative time branch.
Maybe not exaclti Trex, maybe even no attack - just small "You found Mighty Gun in subway, didn't you?"

I know, I was gonna do that, but I'm not confident that everyone's gonna pick up on the fact that they're from 2 different timelines.
I think people might just be confused unless I find some way to do this exactly right.

I thought about puttin the future-guy in a different coloured shirt this time to note that he's from timeline B, but again; I don't think people will assume the right thing. They'll probably just think it's a different guy all-together.

I'm not sure about it, but maybe:

Is that:
(alternative guys' first appear on screen)

"Wait-- Where'd you get that gun?" could be a good line. That might work.
Okay if I put all these ideas onscreen together maybe HALF the people will get it, then later on I can have future-timeline A version of you run into future-timeline B version of you. Then EVERYONE will probably get it.

And as for me, it doesn't seems to be a problem Wink
If player has some flashback in his memory (Yay, I've seen those guys on first level! Now I understand, WHO they are!) - this is great. If game has some "understory", that's clear just right to the end - this is briliant, I think.
Cheers, keep working Smiley

What's the problem with people not getting it at all in the first place?

Or, if no one gets it, then it's art.

(I'm joking.  Mostly.)
