Is anyone else watching the news right now? My mom texted me about the 8.9 earthquake in Japan... all of my relatives on my dad's side are over there, so we're trying to figure out what's going on... it looks insane out there.

Well, if there's anyone capable of shouldering a severe earthquake, it'd be Japan.

My mom's a huge earthquake geek(and also paranoid) so yes she saw it while surfing USGS. Apparently the number's been revised a few times. Also some aftershocks.

Been watching the footage on Al Jazeera for nearly an hour now, can't peel my eyes off it. This is incredible and terrifying. A giant flaming tsunami carrying boats and crashing them into farm houses jesus. 8.9 earthquake is masssive. http://english.aljazeera.net/watch_now/

Yeah, the tsunamis seem to be doing a lot of damage on the farmlands. Makes me worry about the resulting tsunamis that will hit around other places in the Pacific. I heard they even issued warnings in places like Peru. The warnings are categorized as low there, at least.

Thanks Chevy, I've been looking for a live feed online like this (I had been watching clips off of youtube prior to that). This is just awful... when you said "flaming tsunami" I thought you just meant it was really large or something, but the wave actually is carrying flaming houses along with it... it's wiping out the land so quickly

They've issued tsunami warnings in my home state of California as well. I'm in Rhode Island now, but my mom's right on the water and not answering her phone. They're predicting at most 3 feet of water, and she's up on the bluffs, so it's probably fine. But I worry.
Wish she ever watched the damn news.

We're also on the coast of California, so we've been watching for tsunami warnings. At this point it seems like it might reach here, but it won't really make a big impact (it'll just be like waves on the beach). So as long as it stays like that I'm sure your Mom will be fine Hope she answers her phone though!

Makes me glad I live on the baltic shield where earthquakes don't happen. That is scary stuff.

Scary stuff. Makes me glad I live in a land-bound and largely earthquake-free country.

The CNN recordings are pretty scary.
Seems like 2012 is getting closer.

2010 and 2011 are just earthquake-filled, aren't they? From Haiti, Chile, China, and even Turkey to Japan.

It's looking like 3 feet in the Bay Area, and mom's considerably more than 3 feet above sea level. She'll probably sleep through the whole thing. My friend in Oakland is worried her art studio's going to flood, though.
And on that note, time for PAX East.

Thankfully my in-laws (from Tokyo) were ok. I'm still catching up with all my mates there, but it seems most of them escaped the worst of it. Horrible feeling...

It's amazing what good engineering and earthquake preparedness can do. This earthquake is ~100x larger than the 2010 Haiti earthquake and the death toll is probably going to be ~1/1000 of Haiti. Still, the floods look insane.
