First thing I'd try would be to separate the image into a HSL colour space. Then I'd have 7 or 8 bits for the Luminance (127 - 256 shades) so that PNG or your compression routine (GZIP, etc..) can work best over the repeated lengths and slight changes.

Then I'd pack the hue and saturation into 8 bits if possible and compress those. I've done work like this before and you can get much better results than working in the RGB space with colour space reduction.

ooooohhh you're talking about making your own format all together.  PNG posterize provides the best bang for the buck 'out of the box' but you're definitely right a custom format would be better.  For our purposes we didn't need to go hardcore like that.

I stopped developing the Game Maker version to write the design doc for the DS version in 2007. When the DS version didn't happen, I pretty much stopped working on it altogether but I had planned on doing something with it again someday. Currently, it is the next project I hope to work on, doing a proper remake for PC and other platforms with new graphics and improved gameplay, similar to how Spelunky was remade for XBLA Smiley

While we're waiting for review, we're trying to kick our marketing ass in gear.

I'm currently working on getting a new website up and running with wordpress.  After that, I've gotta finish a marketing illustration.  Also working with a studio to get us a pretty nifty trailer video.  All is coming together Smiley
