Fizzysoft has released version 1.5.0 of
FileCarver, a powerful developer tool for editing binary files. This program allows the user to specify the format of an arbitrary binary file, and from this it will generate a fully-functional GUI to edit files in the format. Using this program for creating editors for game-specific binary files is a huge productivity boost, as creating a fully-fledged file editor is as easy as making a short XML definition of a file format.
What's new:
Smaller memory footprint and better performance
Numerous user interface refinements
New hex editor control sporting many improvements
Added an "Open Recent" menu listing recent documents
Added display="text-area-monospaced" for string fields
Ability to include XML from external files
Ability to define re-usable types
Support for a global script on the format definition
Support for specifying custom input and output filters
UTF-16 encoding removed in favor of UTF-16LE or UTF-16BE
Various improvements to the javascript support
Improved platform-specific integration
Miscellaneous bug fixes and other improvements
Spare yourself writing custom file editors. Don't put up with storing your data in larger, slower-to-parse XML files. FileCarver lets you keep your files small and fast to load, while providing you with a rich GUI for editing them.
Try it out for yourself, and feel free to post your feedback! Thanks.
