I finished Axiom Verge the other day. To be honest, I don't get why it was hyped up so much - my lasting impression is that it was a fairly cookie cutter Metroidvania, with the blandest level design I've ever seen in a game that's otherwise reasonably polished. There were maybe three or four places in the entire map that had interesting arrangements in them, but the rest just seemed so...pointless.

The music and sound design were pretty nice. The story wasn't my kind of thing, but it was functional...though I wish it wasn't told so unevenly. There was basically one big story dump at the beginning, one in the middle, and one at the end, with everything in between consisting mostly of "run around without a clear goal and collect whatever stuff you happen to find".

I'd usually try to 100% a game like this, but it didn't hold my interest nearly well enough to feel like it was worth bothering. I only found about half of the weapons in the game, and maybe around half of the story notes. I think I finished with 97% map exploration, so most of the things I missed must have been deviously hidden just barely out of sight. Whenever I'd get a new powerup that gave me extra mobility, I knew there were a bunch of places around the map where I could probably use it to find hidden stuff, but this would involve trudging through every place I've been before, sometimes multiple times, just hoping for the chance that I might find something new. It felt like a chore, and I didn't want to do it as many times as it would have taken to find everything.

What am I missing? Maybe the game gets better somehow if you try to speedrun it? My experience with a game usually isn't this far out of line with its critical reception.

The SNK pretzel movements for activating spells are awful though. There's, like, one button on the controller that isn't used for anything, I'd love to be able to just hold that down and press one other button to do magic instead of having to feel like I'm playing Fatal Fury.

Other than that it's a gud gam.

arent the spells meant to be more like cheats to begin with?

Dragons quest builders. Really really fun. I like how it's a bit more directed. So far it's pretty relaxed and the music is nice so it's a great game to chill out playing.

Playing Grim Dawn now.

Why I didn't pick this game sooner?

Yeah. Path of Exile is great too. I love all its character customization in skills and passive tree.

But although Diablo 3 is there, it's doesn't appeal me to get it.

Diablo 3 is beautiful from a graphical perspective. The rest of the content wears off in about a 1-2 weeks of playing. Still worth the 30$ it is nowadays.

I don't know about on the PC, but on the PS3/4 with a controller and other players co-op D3 is a ton of fun (though I agree, the repetitiveness really sets in hard within a week or so).

I was browsing GameJolt and picked up Super Crate Box for a bit. It's a fun little game but now that I'm attempting to make a game of my own I get a little worried I'll start taking ideas from others instead of creating new stuff. That and I'm not very good at the game so idk if I'll be playing it much more. I watched a yt video where the player talks about the philosophy of the game whilst blasting past 100 crates easily. Put mah skills to shame and now I'm a little too embarrassed to play it more.

good. WARNING: the prologue/"tutorial" area is a bit boring (in my opinion), but if you push past that, it's great.
