Game maker going 8.1

http://glog.yoyogames.com/?p=3045

Its now going to cost 40$.(reasonable if you ask me though theres no doubt some people wont like this. It is still 25$ up until June though)

Also, shit yes! Room editor zooming! I'm going to buy the shit out of GM 8.1 now. A game im working on with dark 16X16 tiles forced me to lower my screen resolution to like 800X600 every time to see what the hell I was doing, so this is very welcome indeed.

Also in the new version: panning with the mouse wheel (cool I guess??), more customization in the code editor and better code editor in general, better interface in the room editor in general. They also say the 2d and 3d rendering is faster and there's now a couple new d3d functions. How about making GM games stop being inherent resource hogs next guys???

Hopefully raising the cost means they decided there's money in improving their software again so they'll work on it in earnest. Maybe. ??

Also no more softwrap! Pretty cool that.

What do you guys n gals think? I'm using game maker less and less but I like this.
Is Game Maker relevant again?? **feh feh Construct/MMF is so much better** I know shut up ;_;

Also they say you'll need to be using this version to be able to publish your game in their game store.

Is it a free update for people who already own GM8 or would I have to pay for it again?

The lack of softwrap is probably the best part. The room editor stuff is appreciated but considering these features should have been in GM for years their addition leaves a bitter aftertaste.

yeah if you already have 8.0 it should be free.

Also thinking about it I dont think they ever say they took out "DRM", just "Softwrap".... they could have just replaced it with another system thats just as bad. Or maybe theyre just back to the key-based unlocking.

...replaces Game Maker Pro, 8.0 and will be required as THE version for the Game Store publishing (which we are working on the opening very soon)...

Changing the name from "Pro" to "Standard" also leads me to believe there will be another, more expensive option, too. Probably including the tutorials/demos and default assets for another $30 upcharge. If that's not "milking," check out the poll to the right. WTF

Noir Why can't I just be optimistic anymore?

That won't be the case... I think it will be trivial features like access to a certain section on YYG or some 'exclusive' thing.

I get the feeling that theyre looking for sustainable income, so im thinking they would probably have the new "pro" version be subscription based with a recurring fee. I get dat feeling...

If so, I will no longer be using GM. Time to learn a new tool, boys.

zoom in room editor. about fucking time

now, things you should be doing, yoyogames, but isnt:

-proper music support for the sake of god
-better default save system
-better runner or whatever
-somehow remove the absurd 2mb exe that comes as a bonus when you create an exe (idk if its possible at all)
-implement a decent view system as default (something like chevy's system)

also, this:

i'm curious about the "Better 2D and 3D support with a 24bit ZBuffer and faster rendering." part -- does that mean no more screen tearing?

In addition to that, better support for saving resources externally and loading them when needed. Externally saved resources should be manageable from within GM's interface (rather than just GML)

It's most certainly possible. When compiling an exe, code to run everything is packed inside along with yours: this includes 3D, Mplay, midi-file playing, surfaces, primitive drawing, DLL calls, every feature available for GM. If GM let you select what 'libraries' you'd need for your game (Let's say you're making a 2D offline game: No need for 3D or mplay), the exe's size could be reduced by about half.

They'll probably let you auto publish to appstore yourself. If so, it will probably be several hundred $$

I'm not too worried about what addition aside from the "standard" they'll have so long as the "standard" version is fully functional.

Yep, that's what I'd think. With the html5 thing.

Only information I can find for you on that one Rinku:

Which is why a 24 ZBuffer was added.

I would really love better support for embedding games into webpages.

Edit: Wait nevermind I just saw the HTML 5 stuff.

That's Me  Grin

A 'larger' z-buffer should remove problems like these:

[Screenshot from my game]

The door is rendered badly when moving away from it. A more precise z-buffer should avoid these problems.
I actually hoped for 64-bit, or at least 32-bit. But Mike made it 24 :[

Deployment for other platforms most likely. When I asked them about it on Twitter, they replied with "Maybe......".

In any case, I'm happy about this update, but I still mostly wait for the GM9. Multiplatform development and a better runner is really all I need right now.
