Hey Gabriel, Just check out this for some more help: http://glog.yoyogames.com/?p=3348first couple of paragraphs are help. It's a pain, but ya know.. I tried inputting my old activation code but it says it's already in use. Yeah, this happened a few times for me, too. E-mail softwrap from the address you registered with (it makes things easier for them, meaning faster for you) just say the usual 'hi, my copy of game maker has unregistered, could you please fix it up for me, blah blah) and yeah, should do it. They're pretty fast, generally speaking. gm is notorious for that problem. it seems their new software protection isn't any better than softwrap at it? Actually, it's going pretty good so far for me. The problems people are having are getting their free upgrade.. it's just a bit more extra hassle contacting YYG's, and sorting things out. But once your registered, it's pretty good. I've had to reinstall GM8.1 a few times, and didn't even have to re-enter my key which is nice.

It's fucking pathetic though. I get the feeling that the bug is probably pretty low on their priority list since it probably generates income for them.
Heh, well they have to get the GM8 keys from softwrap, and put them in some system of their own that recognises them. I'm not surprised their having issues... we all have had issues with softwrap. I do recommend to e-mail them, though, and get your legit key. You never know, if you have any issues with your new license, just tap in your old one, while your sorting out issues.

That's odd, do you have the latest update? Never had that issue before, just double checked now(I usually open GM, then load, anyway) A quick look on the GMC shows that other people are having similar issues. The updater is great in that we're getting updates(and features!) fast, and quickly, but the downside is that the updates do come with bugs that take another version to get fixed.. Mike released a couple of updates last week, lets hope he keeps up that work-rate. You may want to submit a bug report: http://bugs.yoyogames.com

Yeah, I have that issue as well. It's quite the pain in the neck.

Same here. Would piss me off to no end, if GM4Mac wouldn't be the same (or even worse--it has two apps open at all time), so I kinda got used to it.

If you're on Windows with Admin access, open up regedit under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, find "gm81file" and expand it two levels to the "command" level, click on it, and on the right side, right click on "(default)" and hit modify to change it. For it to properly open the file, you need the %1 at the end. Below is the value for my (Default) key
"C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Roaming\GameMaker\Game_Maker.exe" %1

Ugh, so I downloaded 8.1 lite to my laptop yesterday in order to have a working machine to go to SBGJ, worked on my game all of yesterday afternoon, and now I can't open the files in 8 regular... Goddammit YYG. So the two options are wait until tomorrow for softwrap to send me the license key (I have 3 purchases of GM, lulz), or pay $40 to just buy it again? Goddammit, YYG.

Yeah, new versions always break backwards compatibility even if they don't contain any code-relevant new features. I can sort of understand it from a marketing standpoint, but it still sucks. Always keep backups around, I guess.

I have backups, they're just backups from before yesterday. It's not the end of the world, just bummed that I couldn't jump right back in this morning after having such a productive day yesterday.

Destral, GM8.1 isn't using softwrap? Or do you need it for your free upgrade. Also, I'm not sure why you say "Goddamit YYG's".. GM's versions have always not been backward compatable well before YYG's took over (GM6 to GM5 at least, etc). Anyway, there *is* an unofficial GM8.1 to GM8.0 converter here: http://gmc.yoyogames.com/index.php?showtopic=505903please read the whole topic first, make sure you save backups of your files first, etc. I think converting is mostly just a matter of changing a few bytes in the file structure. Also, I imagine LateralGM will be adding support for the GM8.1 format, too.

It's had support for it for quite a while, although you probably need to checkout an SVN version.

I figured it out, I was trying to upgrade the two licenses of GM that I hadn't upgraded from 7 to 8 (which now I'm bummed about ). Goddamit, Destral, stop being such a noob.
