Finally after a month without updating, I have some progress to show!

Updating with a brand new gameplay video of the Game Maker version

And some screenshots:

And the concept of the last boss: Grigori.

Art done by 2Minds

I decided to change a lot of things from the construct version, the game now is much more puzzle oriented and linear. I decided to take a VVVVV-like approach, trying to use a single mechanic in absolutely every way possible.

just saw the new video from a few days ago, looks way more tuned or the pace is different or something, I like it!   Also a bit reminded of Apogee platformers as 57E mentioned!

I think I forgot to say that since I moved to Game Maker I made some drastic changes in the design and concept of the game.
I believe the main idea of the game is to be something like a collection of a lot of old, tacky things, with some conflicting art styles and even game design ideas. So, I want to include a lot of this old games elements (like the great MegaMan covers and the Zero Wing opening). I'm not very sure about using Engrish, I think it's a little overused, so, for now, I'll try to write correctly.

Time to update some more stuff, first, here's the pixel art of the game villain, Grigori:

And concepts of the spaceships:

(this one was done by Thiago, of 2Minds, check his new blog  Grin)

and finally some fucked up 80's anime intro that has absolutely nothing to do with the current art direction of the game Grin

Thanks Smiley There will be, in fact a intro SHMUP level in the game, but it will be very simple.

I'll post some screenshots as soon as I finish the sprites.

If you want to evoke a classic poor translation feel without resorting to engrish, one good way is to just make the english very academic and wordy, as that's how people are primarily taught new languages.
  • No contractions or short forms etc
  • Unnecessarily polite or flowery words and phrasing
  • Verbose and hard-to-follow sentence structure

And if you really want to overdo it:
  • Outdated slang

The game's almost done! Grin Actually the game is already in Beta stage, here's what I'll still do:
  • Add one or two tileset, to add some tile variety
  • Add some extra rooms to increase gameplay time
  • Add another twist in the teleport mechanic, so the game doesn't get repetitive

Here's some new screenshots with the brand new screen filter and effects:
