CAPITAL ZERO - PLATFORMER

Is a platform game based around wall jumping and dodging obstacles.

The game is not finished yet, I plan on adding more levels and many other things.
such as sound, level selection screen and a real ending.
Currently 25 levels + a secret level!

Anyone who wants to help me with testing could you time yourself to see how long it takes you to beat the game (You can use an online timer)
Can you also tell me how many deaths you had at the end.

STORY LINE
None at the moment, there may be one in the future.

FEATURES(Some of them... I keep forgetting to update these)
Saws
Moving saws(horizontal)
Moving saws(vertical)
Spikes
Cake
blocks that break
locked doors
keys
Death counter
Acid pools
Acid pools that rise up from the bottom.

CONTROLS
Press 1 to skip to the next level (only for testing)
Hold the UP KEY and the direction you want to go to wall jump.
R KEY = reset level.
F4 = fullscreen mode.

Update!

Changes
Added some new tiles to make the game more interesting to look at.
Changed the sprite for the blocks that break.
Minor tweaks to the level design.
I think I like the character more without it.
and probably some other stuff that I forgot.

Remember, if you want to see the changes but don't feel like playing the game over just Press 1 to Skip levels.

Im trying to find an artist to make me a background or some tiles for the game but no luck yet. Im really too poor to pay anyone to make them so there won't be any backgrounds for the levels until I can find a willing artist.

The error is because I havn't made the game past that point.
the error happen's because theres no next room for the game to go to.

I beat it too - took me 39 deaths, and about 12 minutes of playtime.
I tried a couple more times, and my best attempt was 9 deaths (and I found the secret  Wink)

On the art side, I think the most pressing thing is to do something with the huge areas of wall tiles you have on some of the levels - the flat colour background is unobtrusive, but the big regular grid of tiles (like on the third screenshot in your first post) are a bit of an eyesore.

At the simplest you could try making different sized tiles (long ones, wide ones, big square ones) and then putting them together to fill up the required space.

Try looking at other tile based games to see how they make things look more interesting. (Basically, variety is essential - no 32x32 pixel tile is going to look super exciting when there's a big area of it.)

See how they use different sized blocks (and slight colour variation) to make it look less bland. Imagine how much worse it would look if they only had one wall tile.

Or look at 100th, which has really simple graphics but maintains interest with variety.

Anyway, I liked the pacing of game - it's really nice how quickly you can get through rooms, and I was disappointed when it ended. So keep it up!  Smiley

Im not an artist at all so i've had a really hard time trying to do the graphics for this game.

Im going to search around for someone to make some tiles for free.
If I don't find anyone willing to then I will pay someone when I get the money.

I also plan on having different backgrounds/tiles on each stage.

Small bug: if you pick up a pill then die, you can go and pick it up again (and hence get the pill counter as high as you like).

Yeah Im trying to find a way to fix that bug but I really have no idea how to.
Right now I would pretty much ignore the pills since they don't unlock anything yet.

CHANGES
-Added some music (I made it. Only one song so far.)
-Added some sound effects!
-Added 2 new levels!!
 First new level has slime that rises from the bottom and you have to be fast enough or
 you die.   
 The second new level you have to dodge keys or else the platform you're walking on falls!
 Fixed the glitch where the timer and death count sometimes go behind the tiles.

CHANGES
- Added another song! (Tesselode from the forums made it)
- Changed the background to some scrolling stars. I think it looks pretty sweet.
It makes the game alot more interesting to look at in my opinion.
- Some other minor changes to levels and some of the tiles.

You should keep an array of which pills the player's picked up, and not respawn ones they've already got.

I think you're using gamemaker, which I don't really know. But here's some pseudo code:

On pill pickup:
pill_found_in_room[room] = 1

On pill spawn:
if pill_found_in_room[room]==1 then don't spawn

If that doesn't make sense, I recommend reading some tutorials on arrays!

The game has a nice clean feel to it.
I like the clean art style, not able to check the sound at the moment my headphones are busted but this looks and plays amazingly well.
The levels are pretty hard but not in a unfair way.
I have one minor suggestions though, maybe you could give the player character a different pose for being idle? facing at the screen or something? instead of looking left or right?

The idle idea is great!

After the player hasn't moved for a certain amount of time
the idle animation will play.
