I don't have much use for the term, along with 'pretentious', but I would say a movie characterized as such has good visuals and virtuostic handling of cinematic devices and 'tricks', with less of a fleshed out and complex plot.

Will watch Amour next tuesday.
Amour was an incredible film, but I never ever ever want to watch it again. Absolutely gutwrenchingly bleak.

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre - This is my favorite Bogart film. He is more dynamic and flawed here than in his usual noir tough-guy roles. Though Casablanca may be a better film, I prefer this one.

Ever see 'In A Lonely Place'?
Brilliant and less well known. I love the story behind it, too. Guy is told to write a screenplay based on a popular pulpy trash novel, and instead of doing so he makes the protagonist a screenwriter who's paid to write a screenplay about a popular pulpy trash novel, and instead of doing that he goes on to write a screenplay about people.

haneke is a very good filmmaker but watching his films you kinda get the impression that he hates everyone. i'm also not a big fan of the harshly moralistic overtones of his work.

Recently saw the Shawshank redemption for the first time. It's kind of sad how far back video games are in terms of narration.

I watched the anime Mind Game, by the guys who made Tekkonkinkreet. Damn good film, so surreal and dreamy.

Two weeks ago I watched original Django and today Tarantino's Django Unchained. Have to say that the both movies were really good! Though personally I think that the old spaghetti-westerns have their very own charm which Unchained didn't have.

Just saw star trek into darkness
I thought that the scenario lacked a bit of depth
Didn't like the reference( with a twist) to star trek 2, found it too cheesy/nerdy
Pro:the evil-nietszchean-superhuman archetype is satisfyingly depicted, not just a piƱata ,another good role model for my collection

Finished Monty Python's "The Meaning of Life" again. It's been too many years since I last saw it.

aguirre is one of my favorite movies. there's something about filmmaking in the 60s to early 70s that i find really exciting.

It's not any worse than it was before, but it's not for everyone.
