If you have important files on your webserver (like a closed beta of your game), then make a creative folder name (not "stuff" or "files")and chmod it! I have already played 2 unreleased games this way.

Yeah, I second that Shocked And if you do put something in a folder called "files", make sure it's something worth downloading, not a horrible prototype build with a shaky camera or something...

Also, don't put in nude pictures of yourself.

I had to learn that one the hard way...www.michaelmoore.com/files

That's actually an elaborate and effective measure against people downloading stuff they shouldn't. Tongue

I named mine "sanguine" once. But other than that I never put code on a webserver anyway.

If someone is smart enough to figure out how to download an unreleased game or whatever, they deserve to play it early.

If someone is smart enough to figure out how to download an unreleased game or whatever, they deserve to play it early.

Depends on whether the author was stupid enough to make it glaringly obvious or not.

What's obvious to some is obscure to most.

As an example, my unreleased game is kept under something like

http://studioeres.com/saturated/SaturatedDreams.rar (actual address, but don't nobody provide feedback yet because it's really not very playable, something like 5% done, and that's actually a pretty old version of it, from February).

Not very obscure at all.

But the only people who would go looking for it are people who a) know what the name of my next game is (a minority, probably only 100 people in the world know it), and b) would care (also a minority). And those who know both a) and b) are not people I'd mind playing it anyway.

And this ladies and gentlemen is the reason why trojans and viruses are such a big success. Is this some sort of "satire" I'm not getting? Recommending creative folder names as a means of security is so ridiculous that it makes coffee come out of my nose. Why would you put files in your web server's directory structure and chmod them? WTF

It's not like access restriction had to be invented first :D
