And now HxH is getting the Chimera Ant arc so you can embrace that in all its animated glory.

Not that different really, the latest one is a remake that follows the manga even closer with faster pacing and no fillers (although what fillers there are in the original aren't jarring or noticable at all). Both are toptier.

more on evangelion 3.33:

did anyone else find it super hard to follow what was going on? all the mumbo jumbo about the twin spears/kaworu becoming the 13th angel?/dual mode evangelion/lilin/curse of the eva bullshit.

they introduced a bunch of new mcguffins and sort of just left them dangling there. animation was godly but i feel like the more obtuse plot elements were just unnecessary.

I think the original was pretty coherent, but I "get" the original final (before the movie). It's like the new movie is a new "fuck you" fan they have been keep doing since the original series, the kind of ironic "isn't that you really clamored?". The new eva keep piling spectacular, twist, mysteries, fan service, etc... in a great abstract patchwork with little substance in my eyes. It's pure spectacle and nothing more. But it seems gainax has been making more of these for while now.

the original series, sure, up until the bullshit about instrumentality (which is what, exactly? it's never really explained) and the dead sea scrolls and other references to judeo christian mythology (not to mention the finale)

hopefully they clear it up in 4.0 but then again probably not gonna happen

The final make perfect sense to me, there was a layered symbolism of god/human, father/son, and a hidden layer based on animation industry (all document zoom up talk about the state of that industry). The end make sense in a way that it deal with relation and identity and some existentialism from the personal in parallel with the blown up epic. I mean If the final was a battle it would not mirrored the beginning of the series (shinji struggle to take action and to define itself and to understand what's its father have lay for it). It makes perfect sense with the christian perspective (I was raised as a christian) about how the way of god are hard to understand, the whole reality being an allegory to this personal struggle and the judeo bullshit mirrored the struggle with shinji. I mean the nerv dismissal slogan (god in his heaven, alright on earth) seems to apply to. The end strongly hint that reality could be different, making the fact that it's all shinji's perception. Now it's not a conventional "it's all a dream" since the perception and the world are actually confused and the same. It's more likely it was message to otaku which project themselves in those world like shinji, it was an allegory not of shinji's world but of the typical viewer as an otaku (hence the creator). And let's be frank, all those experimental insert where we are in shinji's head (in the train) where forwarning of the ending, it was there all along.

The first movie was a fuck you as the ultimate message didn't got through and it was all about rejection and failure of growth (shinji masturbating in front of asuka and her rejecting him at the very last frame). It's very cynic.

The new movies is all about the dream, escapism and denial, it's no more about facing the difficulties of existing but all about fighting monster. It's like the comstock version of evangelion.

That's why the plot hole of the original wasn't so much important, they marker to consolidate the overall tone.
