I had no idea you named minecraft until a couple of minutes ago but I have been familiar with your games (immortal defense mostly) for a couple of years. Smiley

I've also seen a number of indie fangames and spinoffs shot to hell by overprotective developers; and that absolutely tarnished the reputations of the original titleholders in irrepairable ways. A fine example is Konami basically acquiring "Roxor Games" for their DDR-like spinoff, In The Groove. ITG fanpeople - born of their initial love for DDR, is now this fractured community of DDR-haters now because of the legal action - that was completely within Konami's rights - that was taken, even though it had many arguable differences in gameplay.

I wonder when will the first AAA clone would appear. What can a ton of money and huge team do to the genre?

Rip offs are the most pathetic things anyone can ever make. Fan games are fan games, but rip offs are attempts at profiting off other peoples ideas. I used to cringe at the slightest hint of a rip off, but after a couple of months in the smartphone market I learned to get used to it. Honestly I think that every single project manager that works for big smartphone app companies is braindead. I don't have access to enough fingers to be able to count the number of cheap Angry birds ripoffs on the Android market. I hear a lot of people saying the CEOs are artists, visionaries, innovators, and 'game changers' (pun intended) but I have yet to see any proof of that.

I don't think that something like Minecraft is possible without the blocky graphics, for instance, Lords of Uberdark (that cell-shaded non-blocky Minecraft "clone") looks too complicated. Also the blocky graphics gave Minecraft a personality. So I don't think a big team and money can do much for it... although I'm sure that we'll see a lot of big companies try to cash in on the genre and fail hard because they can't understand what makes these games fun.
