Take control of your hue-shifting ship. Strike enemies with their color to do double damage. Collect experience to level up and get the highest score amongst the world!

bombs. needs more bombs.

although, huesiwhatsits and combo multimajiggies are good too. maybe hues have certain types of attacks associated with them.

Sounds interesting!

Like sonicblastoise says, maybe associate a charge-up shot or alt-fire to your hue. Or you might make it so that when you kill an enemy your hue shifts towards theirs (-1 or +1 on the 0 to 255 hue value), so to maximise your score you have to plan out what order you are going to kill the enemies. Maybe the sound effect of a bullet hitting an enemy changes depending on the enemy's hue, so killing stuff becomes part of the soundtrack as well? You might have obstacles around the level that only affect you if you're the same hue as them, or a different hue, or they can block your bullets depending on the hue (red blocks block your movement if you are red, or only red bullets can go through them, or there are fast invincible meteor-things that chase you if you are a different hue than them, but can be killed/absorbed and run away from you if they are the same hue as you).

Many possibilities, I look forward to seeing what you do with this Smiley

Oh, one more, maybe if enemies bump into each other they interact differently if they are the same or different hues (same-hued enemies amalgamate into larger/tougher enemies, different colored 'bleed' color into each other).

Fun! Smiley

Destral, I LOVE your fusion idea. I am close to crying.   Tears of Joy

I'm going to add a method to accelerate your hue shifting so there is not so much wait time. I'm thinking a charge shot - or maybe so it accelerates based on your movement speed. If you're boosting, you could go faster.

Just some ideas to end the night off with.

Day 1

Today, I did:
-Basic movement engine
-Hue shifting
-Simple shooting
-Ideas!
-Lots of ideas!
-Opened a devlog

Tomorrow, I plan to:
-Condense my ideas
-Create an algorithm to detect changes in hues
-Create an example enemy to test this on, and see if it works.
-If it doesn't, re-condense and tweak it.

Day 2

Today, I did:
-Made an algorithm to detect hues
-Wrote down some ideas

Tomorrow, I plan to:
-Finally test this out!

Didn't do much today. Had school work and also had to run some errands. And depending on my plans tonight, I might not get so much done tomorrow either.

The algorithm turned out to be quite simple, something I was really dreading, actually, because I thought it wouldn't be so easy. I had a few troubles regarding the hue (0-240) and the color itself (a string of nine numbers). Reminded me of the days when I didn't know the difference between strings and reals.

maybe you can only do damage to enemies who share the same hue? and you just have to avoid everyone else? or better yet: you can only attack complementary colors while same-hues are your temporary allies?

I was actually thinking maybe attacking them while you are the same hue does no damage, or maybe heals them. As for introducing the concept of complementary colors - I'd better learn them first. I'm a bit skeptical about that because of the multitude of matches there are. Granted there will be fewer because I am using static values for saturation and value.

Not much change, but a few more interesting colors:

I can't seem to take good screenshots. Shrug

Day 4

Today, I did:
-Made the combo system
-Added a simple test enemy to see if the combo system was fun. Including the fusion/growing!
-Decided it wasn't. Rethought some stuff
-Came up with the idea of doing double damage when you are the same hue as the enemy. Implemented and tested. It was fun.
-Added an ability to make it more fun: Speed shifting. If you hold the right mouse button, your hue shifts four times as fast at the cost of spinning out of control for a few moments.
-I got bored, so I added some effects.

Tomorrow, I plan to:
-Design some enemies
-Maybe make some graphics
-Think of a name
-Develop some more ways the hue ties into combat or just the game in general. It feels a little empty.

Screenshots:

Just overshot his hue...

Spinning out of control while speed-shifting

Huh. I didn't work on this yesterday, I swear I did...

Suggestions on a name would be nice!

My suggestion was Glowshoot. Destral followed up with Glowshuet, adding "hue" to the word.

So where do "chute" or "suit" come in? How are they related to the actual game?

Heh, thanks for the suggestions everybody.

Something about Glowshoot I don't like. Glowshuet is clever, but I'm not so big on it either.

I'll think of something, though. Thanks for the suggestions!

Neon Strikers
HSL
Overshift
Hue-N Squadron

Seems pretty cool so far. I'd go more the path of Shock Troopers or OutZone and less Geometry Wars for a better game though (from a general game mechanics/level design standpoint more than an art standpoint).
