Okay, so I'm making this little game called "Debris" - It's mostly an homage to Starfox64 multi-player, although I'm not quite there gameplay wise.

It is currently split-screen only, but you can fly around alone for testing.

I'm focusing on the technical things really right now, but I'd like to know what you guys think the game would benefit from the most gameplay-wise. A few things I'd like to know specifically:

  • How would you imagine a coop/single-player mode for this would look like?
  • I know the controls aren't great, especially when using the mouse - any ideas for improvement?
  • More to come..

Here's a screenshot:

Update
The last release wasn't working for a lot of people. I think I fixed most of the problems, at least where possible. But this time I'd still like to hear from a few more people before I make the next version official. Here's a list of things we changed:
  • Lots of testing and compatibility fixes for ATI cards - some work now, some don't
  • Some compatibility fixes for older NVidia-cards
  • Mouse-sensitivity can now be changed in the settings menu
  • Added optional PSSM (higher quality) shadows - mostly untweaked and slow right now, so use at your own risk Wink
  • Added OpenAL dlls, so they don't need to be installed manually anymore

Download here: Debris 0.4 (rc1)
Website: http://www.cataclysm-software.com/debris (still has the older version)

To play this, you need a fairly modern graphics card that'll support OpenGL 2.0
NVidia cards seem to have problems with the 16x.xx driver line - I recommend an update. ATI cards *should* be working with a modern driver, tho I can only test/debug remotely and it might be dodgy.

If it's crashing, please attach the logfile from data/user Gentleman

I'm getting a runtime error every time I try to run it. I have an 8600GT graphics card, running Windows XP Pro SP 1.

You probably have to update your drivers beyond the 16x.xx line.

Thank you, kind sir, for making me want to work more on Star Box. I'll snag this to see what improvements I'll have to make. To the plan, that is. Star Box is not quite yet in a playable state.

Anyways, I'll update this post with some feedback in a bit.

Nevermind. Sad

I have the same graphics card as HCR, but my drivers are all updated. :|

Hm, there's a logfile in data/user - could you attach that?

Have you checked to see if OpenAL has been installed?  It is required to start the game or you will get that error or a similar error.

Get OpenAL http://www.openal.org

Same here... graphics card crossfire HD2900XT. I have updated OpenAl as well, but it keeps crashing no matter the settings I change.  Sad

Pretty interesting. I had to update/install OpenAL manually to get it to work. But it works and it's pretty smoothly. I tried with two player split screen (I've only got one gamepad) and there wasn't any slowdown. Part of the menu for selecting the control method is cut off:

I don't have anyone to play against so I can't say much on that.

I've tested it on Vista with an onboard GeForce 6150 SE chipset.

Works ok for me, on XP + SP2, AMD sempron 2400+ (socket A), gforce 6600 ( drvs nvidia version 163.75 ). Tested at 800x600 and 1024x768.

Nice and smooth graphics.

About the controllability with mouse + kbd: I ended setting mouse sensivity at 5, that was ok for turns left-right; it felt a little too sensitive for up-down.
I think the response is not bad; anyone who has played Unreal Tournament Capture the Flag with Strangelove will have no problem, even if the controls are not the same ( strangelove uses only mouse to control movement )

For single player coop you can do a classic campaign  goodboyz vs monsterz, with chapters flawored as:

1. Your base is under atack (walking monterz big size, having atacks with missile, plasma, etc). Kill the monsters, when nearly defeated they run to their spaceship, heavy fortified, turrets, honing missiles, etc. Destroy defenses, maybe destroy navy). Terrain mostly flat. Maybe divide in two chapters.

2. (In another planet ? Candy scenaries!!) Explore and find Some_Important_Building, Ocasionally there will be misile or canon hostile fire, but the meat of the level is smooth driving in progresive trickly terrain ( valleys, caverns, XX_misterious_natural_structures_with_holes_and_lightining, ...).
Once spotted the SIB, fade out , end of chapter

3. Bombardement the Some_important_building ? May need trainning and a Bomber-HUD

4. Rescue: in planet Z, city Q there are hostages. The scenario has medium complicated natural terrain in the border, city of masive futuristical buildings in the center. You know hostage's exact location.
The mission goes as:
clear a path to the hostages location ( monster and enemy misiles can appear, but some specific city peril must be concocted, by example energy barriers that can be shutdown destroying certain characteristic structures, and some that cant be destroyed but have some small holes )
Then One flyer must go down to take the hostages, friends must cover, or maybe
in turns all flyers must land.
At the return, there will appear some flying enemies; not to hard to beat, they can be some dumb flying saucers ( for easy AI )
The chapter can be broken in two

5. If dogfigth AI is doable, protect a city from aerial atack, both bombers and fighters.

6. Final atack to the big capital-fortress-whatever. Dogfight in aproach, land defenses destroy, escort nuker, NUKE!

Yes, the history is not surprising, what is worth are the challenges, the scenaries and the eye candy.

Keep up the good work!

Hey guys,

I'm one of Jax's general helpers on this project.  I do a little bit of everything when I can from modeling to web design.  Thanks for the feedback so far and keep it coming if you please.

We have a new website in the works for this project that will release with 0.4 or soon after so stay tuned for that.

Hope you guys enjoyed this early taste and will stick around for upcoming releases.
