The ship design is from the series, didn't start with the game, but can't forget the Valkyrie's from Choujikuu Yousai Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie (I can't find a good picture but the art and sound in that game were amazing)

Favorite though is the R9-A w/ force (probably followed by the R13 from delta/final)

Growing up I always thought that the Arrow Head looked so cool, even though I felt Final was kind of an disapointmet after Delta showed what could be done with series. The ship designs is realy good though i think.

I felt the same about Final. Delta was superb after the 1st two levels (they were nice but seemed a bit generic to me), I`d happily buy an HD version if they made it.

Final tried to do too much, and the level design seemed really slack in how it had to accommodate all those different ship types. In Delta all 4 ships' (4th unlocked once completed) differences balanced well with the level designs, it felt like R-type but in 3d, which to me Final didn't at all.

I've always been in love with the bulky design of the Axelay ship, despite the inconsistencies in its design according to whichever artist draws it.
It's like a jet growing out of a pair of boxing gloves and I love it.

This. It looks like a space rocket and a submarine made babies. <3
