Hello, I'm Susie and I'm a Graphic Designer. I'm interested in starting something here called: Teeny 25x25 Pixel Comps.

I did this as a personal project for my portfolio. The idea is to limit yourself to a 25x25 pixel space and design a composition. I used this as an exercise inbetween other projects to stay visually keen; I found it helpful and I wanted to pass it forward. Mostly, I want to see what the talented pixel & non-pixel artists here do with this!

I picked 25x25 because it seemed small enough for a reasonable amount of constraint, and large enough to have interesting possibilities. It's also nice that it is an odd number with an absolute center in this square configuration.

I've made 24 pieces. It was helpful for me to know how I was visually solving the same limited space. I tried not make a habit of using the same elements too much, so that each composition had its own character. Of course, it'd be interesting to see pieces in series too.

But that's a lot of bibbity-bah. Hopefully this thing can start rolling! Please contribute!

If you want the sizing in this thread to stay consistent, I made a 25x25 pixel comp in Photoshop and then sized it up 1000%  (Turn Nearest Neighbor/Preserve Hard Edges scaling on in the Image Size panel.)

tl;dr version = Make a 25x25 pixel comp and post it here please.

End result = Gallery of stuff with the same parameters.

Just maybe you should consider other image format than TIF. It might have been standard in print media 10 years back, but in web it's quite useless..

The files are still quite small, so I don't know why tiff was problematic (are there usually viewing problems?) In any case it's all been changed to jpg.

Use PNG for any kind of pixel-art.

Gotta agree that PNG is the best choice here. Going by filesize alone, you could load about 1000 copies of my image in the time it takes to load one of yours. Think of the dialup users!

Firefox doesn't support it. And using JPG for pixel art is an insult. JPG is okish for photos (it's designed for photos) but it will introduce artifacts. Wikipedia has a few examples: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JPEG

Use PNG, it's designed to keep every bit of color information intact, while reducing the filesize as good as possible.

It's still a standard in print design.

I might have to start making these every now and then for practice. I really need it.

Thanks, at first I saved as tiff because for some reason Photoshop wouldn't let me save the psd as png. It seems to be cooperative now though, so I'll update to png as soon as I figure out what went wrong.

*Edit: Turns out I had them saved as CMYK–I'm just transgressing every pixel art faux pas, aren't I?

Misunderstood and thought it was 25*25 MOCKUPS, not simple compositions. Oh well, fighting game in a forest:

That's the gist of it; glad you find it helpful Smiley

It's a 25x25 space to do with as you please. The idea of a a game taking place within 625 pixels is intriguing.
