I don't really care either way, as long as I've got my DS... (Note: Not actually me)

That is a cynical way of looking at it. A potentially accurate way of looking at it as well, but very much glass-half-empty.
I'm thinking collectible card game, with a little chip embedded in each card. A game like that would not need much data stored on each card, and most of the data would be basic numeric data. There are a lot of attractive opportunities for developers in this sort of technology. I guess but thats an ok use for it but most companies are probably just going to use it to milk additional cash from their games. I did some research on this "Skylanders" thing and it looks like you'd have to pay like $300 to unlock all the characters which is ridiculous (though not surprising coming from Activision, the kings of overpriced DLC). It's more expensive than Steel Battalion, a game that came with its own custom controller I think new videogames already cost too much as is and I hope this technology bombs when it gets used for games that arent aimed at small children.

You can be sure that 80%+ of the applications for this tech are going to be shameless cash-grabs, especially early on. (before developers have gotten a chance to explore the potential) And your example of Skylanders is entirely valid. You know that each Skylanders figure doesn't actually come with any content, right? Those little chips aren't nearly large enough to store actual content. They just gate off content that is already on the original disc. Any DLC they are associated with is not actually stored on the figures themselves. The figures just gate off your ability to download and install that DLC. This is one of the most obvious cash-grabs possible. You are paying $60 for a game, and then you have to pay huge sums of money for the little collectible figures that let you unlock the content that is on the game that you already paid money for. It would feel a lot less abusive if the core game was free, and you just had to pay for the figures. But as prone as this technology might be for shameless money-hungry abuse, I won't grudge publishers or developers this opportunity. Making money off of physical items is a reliable source of income for them. In this age of increasing DLC, this is going to be a way for the industry to maintain a solid foothold in more traditional stores. (without giving up the possibility of DLC)

You will be able to buy Mass Effect DLC in the form of action figures. The DLC you get with each figure is randomized. I shit you not.

Games: no longer about quality experiences and instead about gimmicks and feature lists.

1986: Sunsoft releases Atlantis no Nazo, with its primary selling point being its superior number of levels compared to Super Mario Bros. There have always been cheap gimmicks, and there will always be cheap gimmicks. (indie4ever)

Fuck, Gimmy evolved while he was away. He's now Gimmeotto. When he evolves into Gimmeot at level 36 his posts are encrypted in an unbreakable cipher.

There is not really a problem at all. We will all be familiar with "Wii U" just because we get accustomed to whatever is thrown at us. Just think about "apple" and bananas.
