Definitely go with Jmickle's idea- tubes running through the water. Some can be empty, but others could be filled with currents. Also, sort of airlocks that let you go out into the surrounding water once you get a special waterproof suit that comes packed with a motor that lets you move faster/more freely underwater.

You could go the Metriod route and power bomb the tube.
You could make the player go there for an item, and make him go through the tubes and maybe a couple water rooms but not able to get to most of the area. Then later he comes back with a new item that lets him break the tubes and explore the whole area.

I kind of like that idea. That means I'll have to redesign the map there a bit, but that'd hardly be a problem.
Thanks for the suggestions, everyone!

I just added the first musics in. They're still a bit unfinished, but Noby managed to nail down a really really cool SNESsy style. In short, they're wonderful. It'll still take a while to get all the musics required for the demo, but once I get a theme tune of sorts, I'll whip up a trailer; hopefully that'll compensate the wait for the demo.

Agreed. I'd like to see the different areas and environments in action.

Sorry about the lack of updates! I've finally begun to find a good structure for the underwater area, and am now adding all the necessary details to create it. I've been and will be ENORMOUSLY busy with school and stuff, so I can't really promise anything, but I think I might get to the next boss fight soonish.
Also the trailer music will be finished soonish! Herp derp.

I think Hempuli usually uses Multimedia Fusion 2.

Indeed I use the lame joke that is MMF 2. On other notes, things are looking good again! I struggled a lot with the fact that mario-style swimming is really boring in this kind of a game, so I'm going to implement a powerup that makes swimming go smooth. This means that the underwater area will be a bit larger than first envisioned, but I don't mind that. Also, large tubes were mentioned:

That's looking really nice. Also like the screen transition wipes.

This does indeed look good, but the fish look like they're swimming in air because you can't tell there's water there. Maybe you should tint it, or add some bubbles floating up? Anyway, it's looking awesome!

I think this is a problem with A) the fact that there's no parallax, and thus no sense of depth, and B) the fact that due to limited colours, the water must be black along with the rest of the background. I guess I'll add some kind of bubbles. Parallaxes have been in my mind a lot, as well!

Use that effect you used for the heat wave thingy on the space where the fish is. As in, sideways waves.
