Yeah that's always tricky... sometimes it's worth putting your foot down, sometimes not. Sounds like your boss is a reasonable person anyway. At least you can continue with your other project.

Still it's a real shame this kind of policy is widely considered normal. Imagine all the amazing part-time indie projects the games industry is missing out on. Sad
