Hey artists!

Thanks a lot for your prior contributions to my thread about autogenerating pixel art. I'm still working on that behind the scenes.

I was wondering if a few of you had five minutes to do something for me? Take this sprite, from the Oryx tileset:

And this palette from ColourLovers: http://www.colourlovers.com/palette/1417629/an_enchanted_forest

Here's an image of the palette if you prefer:

My question is, can you recolor the top sprite (only the first frame is needed really) using the palette only (no other colours incl. black or white)? Either give me a verbal description of a recolor or (for bonus love!) actually mock up a recolor of one of the frames of the above sprite and post it here. Spoiler tags if possible so no-one gets affected by other contributions.

If you could also post your rough experience as an artist (hobbyist, day jobber, etc) that would be grand.

I won't use any of the images without coming back to contact you first (the only place they might get used is in a scientific paper, you can let me know in advance if that's okay if you like). This is part of an investigation into how videogame sprites are recoloured to add a theme to them.

Thanks a lot for having a peek at this. I really appreciate any and all entries.

Having basically no skills whatsoever, here's my attempt:

(I realised you can't spoiler images on here, so here's a link instead:

Something like this? For the record, I'm fine with you using this for anything at all.

Experience: Dedicated hobbyist. I've been doing pixel work for 10+ years.

EDIT: Oops. Added spoiler free link.
EDIT 2: And some description of my experience. Gotta start reading posts in full before replying.

That's excellent, Kevin, thanks a lot!

I'm hoping to show the difference between the selections someone more expert (like yourself) makes in comparison to more novice attempts (like mine) and then possibly investigate ways machines could make novice attempts themselves (it would take some effort to get above quite simple judgements, but I think we can make some progress in basic colour choices)

I dont know if changing the clusters was allowed, I hope I didnt break the rules.

I am a long time hobbyist (~8 or 9 years) and I don't mind you using this for anything you like. I would like to read your paper when it's out if that's possible.

I don't see why changing the clusters shouldn't be allowed, no. Nice idea! This also helps to show how humans are able to think beyond the image they're presented with (another skill that my system will most likely lack).

In case anyone's interested, here's a random assignment from the palette into the target sprite:

http://i.imgur.com/wlmda.png

I'm going to start looking at possible policies for a machine to select colours to map into the sprite soon. I've got a variety of ideas, if anyone thinks they have a particular way of thinking when they go about it feel free to let me know your ideas! Most of my theories are based around ordering the colours in terms of luminance/distance from white or black/etc. and trying to create order that way.

I've got a few more in-depth ideas that might work. One is related to the four colour theorem (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_color_theorem) where adjacent colour segments are differentiated. But I think that might just make garish looking images.

Thanks so much for taking the time to knock these up! It's great to have expert input. I'll definitely update the thread when I've got something readable.

This is my attempt http://i.imgur.com/0cYDh.png.

I'm totally new to artist world (this is probably the 3 official pixel art for me), I'm programmer and decided to touch this due to the need for graphics stuff to be used in the game. I need to create myself.

Please do whatever you want with my work above, and I'm looking forward for your progress on research as well. Good luck !

You didn't really give a firm description of what to do here... recoloring doesn't seem limited to swapping each color for another color, so I figured 'why not change all of it?'

I ended up with some sort of frogman zombie.

e: Hehe... I shrunk it down to recolor it, but apparently I didn't do it enough... mine is double resolution. It probably doesn't count.

enjoyed doing this, didn't know if I was allowed transparent so had to use one of the colours on background Smiley
