I never got the null driver, I may need to check out a let's play of iji to see it.

PROGRESS

I've been trying lots of things, mostly inspired by games like Power Stone 2 and viewtiful joe red hot rumble, but I've decided to stick with what I've already got going. this is just a fan game after all.

well this game is mostly smash bros clone....
It was pretty easy to implement this into the game. I'll set the timer to a lower number and
change the properties of some attacks.

Iji's hyper is a bit more detailed. I've also made dishwasher's look better.

Enemy System

I felt like the game was missing something, then it hit me...there should be more objects to interact with in the game. So I thought I should add enemies from the games popping in during battle to "wreck your shit". They have basic AI, and will attack what ever gets in the way. They die in a few hits.


'Agent' a basic foe from The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai
 


I liked making a rather bland looking character from the game look a little more lively.

These images are looking great, apart from the black outline on her chin My Word!

I see what you mean, I was gonna double outline it like the sprites, but with no double outline it looks weird.  Waaagh!

yeah, just not playable. I want to increase the roster but the spriting would get crazy, let alone stage design.

Two Options at this Point

who ever is reading this post, choose A or B, it would help me out.

A. Increase the roster to 12, keep the combat system the way it is.(add Quote, Golden Knight, etc...)

B. Keep the roster at 7, add more depth to the combat system (add more attacks etc)

I would do both but it would take way too long.

It is what I think Coffee If you do do this option you should put Runman in!
Also I dont know why your saying this is a fangame, it is a great game in its own right Smiley

well yeah, the game is about the characters, and it would add variety.

@ Squidparty  Sure, Runman will be Easy to sprite. I'm guessing you mean the little yellow guy.

I knew that, but that was the only indie game sword-wielder I could think of. If you can't come up with any, maybe you could default to King from Cave Story? See what he could do if he was alive, heh.

EDIT: Or Ip from The Underside with his baseball bat. It'll probably never get finished, but he was a pretty unique character.

yeah, that part kinda pissed me off, he was a cool character. sure why not, King's in

I've decided Chef from the dishwasher for the last character.

The new characters are

King - from cave story

Chef - Dishwasher

@shig - I feel the game needs more depth in combat, something is just missing even with the hypers. or maybe its just the fact that I've been play testing this to death.

You could always have the protagonist from arvoesine as the sword guy. Shrug

Man, there are so many great indie RPGs you could draw a sword guy from! Double-dipping into Cave Story would just be a cop-out, IMHO.

Some suggestions that come immediately to mind:

-- Kaltos Sturn from The Spirit Engine 2

-- Arianna from Frayed Knights

-- Louis from Recettear

Hell, I'd gladly let you use Qudssi or Griffin from TRPG:SoG. It's your call, obviously--I just hate seeing RPGs get ignored in these sorts of projects honoring indie games.

@Craig,  agreed! I didn't really like the idea of double dipping. Each character should be from a different game. I'll set some time aside to play those games, or at least take a good look at them!


@Squid, I'd add him but the roster is too platformer heavy as it is

Progress

changed the melée system

before, a melée  would knock your opponent half way across the stage (and you'd need to chase them). I've changed that. Now it only knocks them back a little. Sounds like it doesn't change much, but it changes the combat almost completely. Now the focus is on attack range, blocking and dodging.

I've also changed the blunt force melée sound effects.

zoom is not as close

the camera will zoom no closer then 512, this allows you to see more of the stage, and items etc..
It just makes the game look better all together.

Griffin from Telepath RPG -- a really rough concept for him right now.


I've never seen a full body image of Griffin, but I will buy telepath RPG to get a better look and learn more about him. Same thing with Frayed Knights.

Demo Update

Ive got the gameplay to feel just the way I wanted it.
now things like combos and air combos are possible, and the game just feels better.
This is how it will play from here on. I can focus my attention on the characters, stages, Items, and modes. Then this thing will be done.
