Great style, I like the bright colours and high contrast. The lights look odd to me though. I think the soft glow looks out of place with the crisp pixelly flatness of the rest of the image.

I know exactly what you mean.
Do you have any suggestions? I'm not quite sure how to go about making the glow fit in with everything else, but still make it.. glow-ey.

You can try a low alpha pixellated circle. Like this

I'm not a pixelart purist or a anything, but I find mixing pixelart with completely soft gradients really weird. It's almost like mixing two different resolutions which is very jarring.

I like the soft glow, as well, but it's just that it doesn't fit w/ the stark, pixelly look of the game. It makes it hard to see, like there's a glare on your computer screen.

Here are two interesting variations that I messed with a bit: Plain flat: A mix between the two:

The pixelsize on those doesn't match the rest of the picture, otherwise i personally like it better.

First, but make the pixels all the same size.

I don't think either of those look as good as the original softness glow. It carried a lot of appeal, to me.

I quite liked the dreamy feel that it added, but it does look out of place.
I'm going to have to messa round a bit more, see if I can find a comfortable medium.

I agree. Especially in the one with the lava and the balloon.... the orange light/glow there was magical.

I didn't mean to turn this into a debate on soft vs pixellated lighting :D It is an interesting question though. I'm planning to implement a lighting effect in my game as well. This is how I did it in one of my own mock-ups. Overlapping lights might be a problem with this method. Here are some of my attempts, along with one of the original lights: The floating light in my edit has a non-linear falloff, which I think looks better than the linear one (and more accurate).

God I love coffee. And these mocks.
I'm so happy that you're playing with the lighting. Just saying.

And i like gradient mixed with pixel art, gives a more original and less flat look. Also because doesn't matter if the light is a gradient or a pixellated circle, if you're using alpha you're already out that "hardcore pixel art" look

Man, this looks so, so good. I loved the mockups when I first saw them so I'm very happy this is going further as a project. Good luck with it <3 coffee
