Hi guys, so this game is about someone waking up in a strange world with strange creatures.
Every level begins with a sentence who gives a tip about the level who follow.
Essence is a classic plateformer, but you will find a lot of different gameplay through 45 levels and 3 worlds. The story will reveal all along the game until you discover where you are and why. So far we have made the world one.

The game is made with stencyl and we get lucky to have a great 2D artist, sound designer and game/level designers. Of course the game is far from be finished, and we need to polish more the graphics part.

So there is some pics, hope you will like the art. And sorry for my bad english :/.

You can follow the french devblog here : http://blogs.wefrag.com/jol/
But I will try to update this topic too from now.

I can't read French either, but looking at your website it appears that your game is being developed by a cat  Corny Laugh

First thanks for your comments. The cat is our creative director (he as no mercy :/).
The trailer is a bit old (very old actually) and the levels aren't finished yet, every level will get a full graphical design. What you see are only the alpha and the graphics part are far to be done yet. For now the game run at 60fps (Stencyl use flixel and box2D) on 720x480 to keep great animations !

Hello guys, my last devblog post is translated :

Ecotone is a single player platform with a strange character. Evolving in a weird world you must find where you are and why. After working on this game for three months, it’s about time to review the project development. So what we have for now :
- World 1 (3 world are scheduled) is almost finished : the bestiary and level’s graphics are almost done.
- 2 recorded musics. (One for World 1 that lasts 10 minutes to avoid repetition and one specially composed for the last level) and sound designs.
- World 1’level design is complete. All we need is to playtest.
Take a look :

Level Design et Gameplay

World 1 is designed in the following way:- Each level begins with a sentence. The sentence allows the player to understand the level or it’s only used to illustrate the level. Sometimes, the sentence is the key to finish the level (Notice that the player will manage to finish the level without take a look to the sentence, but it will be more difficult).
- We try to change a little the gameplay for each level. For examples: speed chase,  resolve a puzzled level based on the sentence, modification of gravity, take control of several characters etc. Each level has something more that make the player want to go further and discover the next level and its sentence.
 - We have made some playtest sessions:  To finish World 1, this takes an average of 1 hour. This raises hope that the game time will last for 2-3 hours about. Which it’s not so bad.

What about now ?

At the beginning of the development, this project should be a little game intended to finish on Kongregate.  However, the project has evolved into something more. We near of 50Mo ( the game weighs 12 Mo but exported with Adobe Air, it weighs 40Mo more). So, the project is more important but still manageable. Now World 1 is finished, the rest should go faster. So, a game too important to be on a Flash portal, we wonder if we should sell the game. Because, that might not seem like much, but this calls a great involvement for all of us, and it will be cool to have this satisfaction.
However, selling a project means to have a structure to retrieve funds, which also means significant costs  to do well (purchase of licenses, to pay insurance etc.); So we decided to do this and we’ll see what could happen. We think about crowfunding or pre-order. Maybe it’s a solution. And yes, we don’t want to tell you more about the story but the game has now a name: Ecotone.

Please, feel free to tell us what you think !
Hey, the game director (wich is a very clever cat) had found a new member for the team:

Really great art style. It looks really smooth and unique. The main character reminds me of a Shadow Shy-Guy - he's cool. Anyway, keep it up!

Thanks guys, glad to see you like the art style. We are working on a trailer for a crowdfunding campaign, we hope you will like Ecotone in animated pictures.

And just a question, where did you will prefer to play the game : computer or mobile devices ?

I agree. I think that action-based games that require precise movements can't really fit mobile platforms. If you want to add in phone development, that's fine, but I can't really imagine playing this on a mobile device. Go for computer!

I can't be more agree with both of you, I think if the game sells well enought, we will work on a new version only for mobile devices.

Hey Jol, what's your opinion about Stencyl?
I'm working right now with Java, but my wife and art idrector is thinking about using something like Stencyl for create other games, kind of Ecotone (that i repeat it looks fantastic). It's stencyl working fine for you to develope a game like this?

Stencyl is awesome for plateformer, if you work with tiles and looking for something simple and powerfull you should go with stencyl !
