Saint Michel, Normandy, France.
It's the smallest municipality in France with only 44 inhabitants. It's basically this town situated on a small island. A chapel was built on the island as early as year 708.

Kumbhalgarh Fort, India

I love this thread by the way. I'm looking for some more unique modern settings compared to anicent/fantasy, if anyone knows of some. I should probably travel. Edit: Looking back at the thread it's pretty even in culture, nature and style, but things like city streets, gas stations, strange houses etc.

Nyiragongo Crater, Congo

@unsilentwill - By modern do you mean cities and stuff?

That link's deformed a bit - here's the right one. Also, an amazing picture from the Wikipedia page of the walled city, showing a rare patch of sunlight. Hard to believe someplace like that actually existed in real life.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/ba/KowloonWalledCityAlley2.jpg
Especially when you realize that its estimated population density in 1987, according to Wikipedia, was 1,255,000/km2. Imagine that - over 30,000 living in just a couple of acres. Also according to Wikipedia, the rooftops were an often-used gathering place. Quite inspiring, if I do say so myself (though obviously not a place I'd even remotely consider living in).

Some of those really remind me of Tekkonkinkreet (click the link for more images) for some reason:

Funny how you say that. I initially found Tekkonkinkreet through its soundtrack, thinking that any movie with its music couldn't possibly be bad. On the playlist I made, one of the songs from Tekkonkinkreet was beautified by an art piece made by Imperial City Boy. They really did fit each other. (

)

All of this is downright incredible and awe-inspiring. I can't stop looking. Seriously.

Halong Bay, Vietnam.

It feels very isolated and surreal when there's mist and all you can see is nearby mountains.
