So, this one is a mashup of genres. It is abstract due to its theme and characters, it is exploratory due to having a big world and exploring it, and it is an arenashooter, well an arena-stay-alive-er because it is.

The match-3 aspect is more interesting, there is this match-3 panel at the bottom, and as you match, you gain shield balls, which protect you against bullets (it will probably be a bullet hell at times), so you basically explore around and stay alive by matching three.

i dont really understand the game yet, but i always support the miscegenation of game genres.

side critique, maybe decrease the amount or omnipresence of the stars, it feels a bit overwhelming.

if you want some help on this graphic wise or design wise,  id be willing to lend a hand

Well the stars are placeholder and they won't be on every sceen, and yeah I will decrease them.
Well, the gameplay works like:

You explore trippy landscapes
Stuff shoots at you
you match-3
the more you match, the more shield you gain
shield protects you from bullets

I'll post a video tomorrow or something, it'l be clearer then.

Lessened the density and changed the player's craft to something "more" "appropriate" :D

oh ya! now we're talking. and now that ive reread your original post, i realize that it makes complete sense. this sounds like a really cool game! it would be cool if there was a way to more intimately combine the match 3 with the shooter, like visually, rather than just having it down at the bottom

Those yellow bubbles appear as you match... They normally are nonexistent. They protect you against bullets.

Due to a recent development in my academic life, I won't have the time to work with this for a while... Attached we have the source and assets (python + pygame) for those interested...

Maybe I'll continue this cuz it's interesting but right now I don't really have time for this...
