btw the bridge thing is just speculation on my part (tho there are some good clues because it does indeed look like a broken bridge), but a trophy description from the game says this: "Gain entry into the Byrgenwerth lecture building, that drifts within the realm of nightmare." or if you consider trophy descriptions "non-canonical", the students at the lecture building all wear byrgenwerth uniforms, the visual design is very similar and a lot of the same assets are used, it has 2 floors just like the lunarium building etc.

a lot of people seem to have missed this and complain about byrgenwerth being small. i guess the game is being a little too subtle for its own good there haha.

If there's one thing the Miyazaki Souls games do extremely well, it's making you feel like a stranger in a place much larger than yourself. The player's anything but the center of attention.

ya i think for exploration to really work *as exploration* in a videogame, it can't cater to the player too much. otherwise it just feels like a virtual theme park.

Not related to Dark Souls, but there's another game I know that does that really well.

And one that doesn't do it so well.

btw there's also some TGS footage of dark souls 3, but there's not much we haven't seen in the other gameplay videos. i do hope the hud is still work in progress tho. the health/mp/stamina bars look like they're from someone's first unity project lol.

btw apparently they'll handle mp regeneration via an estus type item. good.

Hmm, not sure how much I like that. that's pretty much the same thing as having limited uses restored by bonfires, only now i need to occasionally use something to access those uses.

well not exactly. you get more flexibility in how you use your spells. ofc this has lots of potential for imbalance, but we'll see.

oh also i'm getting a strong demon's souls vibe from the art direction in this moreso than dks1 or 2 with the more muted colors and "rougher" look to the environments and stuff. that's cool.

i honestly liked the mana/spell system in demon's souls, the spells were pretty spammable but it wasn't an issue since they were so weak they really only  supplimented using weapons, or if you did a full mage run you just loaded up on spice every shop you hit. (which is a really hard run due to how weak the spells are on  their own)

really? an ng mage run is one of the easiest ways to play the game for noobs. on my very first playthrough way back in 2k9 i couldn't get anywhere until i picked royal as my starting class. spells are extremely OP until ng+ (not least due to their cheese potential thanks to the way aggro works) and firestorm alone can 2shot many bosses.

well, yeah, you can cheese with any ranged weapon/spell in any souls game, it just takes longer. My first run of demons i did as a mage.  When i learned the game a bit better and pretty much stopped relying on a shield you can hit and run him dodging the crush and just blocking the fire wave to stay in close with a 2h weapon and take him out FAR faster, you're given sticky white stuff free earlier in that level and the melee buff items are SUPER strong in demons, and once you beat penetrator you get the best spell in pvp...curse weapon (multiplies your weapons physical by 1.5 non reliant on magic stats, actualy like prepatch dks1 power within it's better to have low stats as it drains less hp )

If you want an easy but interesting run in demons do a thief's ring archer run(the ring is right in 1-1 so right near the start), many bosses will just stand still and let you arrow them to death... and the similar fog ring archer run in dark souls (kill the necromancers right at start for the lantern and trade it to the crow), the game is hilariously easy but does take about twice as long since you just can't stack much dps at range. You can get poison and fire arrows right at the start by opening the shortcut to firelink from lower burgs (do the jump from upper undead burg to get to it faster or just grab the key over by the gargoyles). things like the silver archers in anor londo wont even fire at you, you can just kill them then walk up there.

either way, dks3 apparently uses an estus like item (blue estus) to restore mana so you won't be able to spam spells infinitely either way.

i think having to drink some bluestus in between spells is conceptually kind of lame. now im only super mage guy as long as i got some baja blast

mechanically it's probably the right way to go

Well DS2 had lifegems in addition to estus, maybe there will still be an equivalent for mana. All the same it will probably be more difficult to spam.

i haven't seen anything other than estus in dks3 so far. i'd wager that 3 is probably going to ignore a lot of the mechanics changes of 2 and be its own thing.

looks like theres a mage class in dks3 that is adopting somewhat of a bloodborne hunter look
