I see a lot of sites using WP. Was wondering if anyone here had any experience w/ eCommerce plugins, and if so, what are those experiences?

Decision Tree;
Do I have exp. w/ eCommerce Plugins?

Yes->post w/ recommendations

I've been a Wordpress developer for several years, and the answer to using eCom for using WP is don't... Instead, there are better alternative CMS systems like Magento, Drupal, and Joomla. Joomla and WP fall into the same category because they are primarily used as blog / full suite site system instead of using it as an Ecommerce shop. However, ecom on Wordpress is becoming more and more popular. The best plugin for Wordpress is http://www.woothemes.com/woocommerce/

It's very friendly, and I like using it. It gives you a lot of options and it's open source so you can fiddle around with the packaged pipeline of php files. It's also nice to tweak the functions.php file in Wordpress to suit your needs even more.

They even sell themes geared towards being more of a shop on the Wordpress platform.

However, there are other sites out there than focus on ECOM like Big Cartel and Shopify. I've used these to build my clients sites and these do the job right for ecom. They're extremely friendly, do tax calculations for you and even let you do digital download sales linked up with Paypal.

The reason why I say no to using Wordpress as an E-Com system is because it's extremely vulnerable to brute force hacks and SQL injections.

My experience with dealing with eCom spans security design, frameworking sites around encryption of sales, designing sites on the frontend, and messing around with Ecom plugins and design. I've also have been building websites since I was 9.

If you want my best advice. Build your own ECOM Plugin or build your own frontend CMS structured around an existing CMS, so you have full control. The only problem is the learning curve associated with doing it yourself, and the dangers of screwing up sales. So start out by setting up a fake product, and fake site to test out your sites functionality / or someone else's plugin that you've modified.

If you're still going to use WP for your shop / goods service. still. Then use the woo themes e com plugin. If not check out big cartel, and Shopify. I like using Bigcartel.

I made this companies site both on Wordpress and they chose to use Bigcartel for there online shop needs.

Here's a list of other CMS / Services that are for Ecom.

  • oSCommerce
  • Shopify
  • Magento
  • Big Cartel
  • SquareSpace
  • Etsy - Handmade goods only
  • CafePress - Shirts, Mugs, Posters, Stickers only
  • OpenCart

Also for Wordpress Plugins
Check out - http://codecanyon.net/category/wordpress/e-commerce

There's plenty of e-com plugins that are cheap to buy, and easy to install.

If you're going to be selling digital items like your own game ( I assume you are, since you're posting on Tig).

Then if you' don't want to use a plugin you can create your own Paypal digital dl service, or use Google's own shopping service.

I moved my web site to a new hosting account and decided to create a fresh install of WP E-Commerce using. I have uploaded the gold cart files to the wp-content/uploads/wpsc/upgrades/ folder as directed, but the Gold Cart options tab does not pop up. Any help would be appreciated.

CS-Cart program may be a good idea if you wish to change online business processes.
