So I've been looking at doing a remake of world 1-1 of Super Mario Bros, but I'm not much for the technical side of it. My basic idea was just to overhaul all the graphics.

Was wondering if anyone either wanted to lend a hand with the techincal side of things or could point me in the direction of a simple platform game engine (I'm talking retarded simple here)prefferably one that can handle big sprites etc.

I'd like to do all of world 1 if the process of getting the graphics to the actual game is painless enough, but I figure start small.

pic of the level I've done so far (the image is pretty massive)

and some of the redrawn sprites. I'm looking at actually re-animating them because a 3 frame walk cycle just looks terrible.

With that awesome stuff up there I'm sure you'll find a developer to pick you up.

Braid ripoff.

Hilarious jokes aside, I find this rather pretty. Nice one.

EDIT: Added "hilarious", because it was.

Cool! The sprites are much closer to the style of the original Mario than anything Nintendo has done since. It always had a much darker and grittier feeling to me than later iterations with the grinning Mario.

Reminds of an idea I had, where the game takes place in a 2D NES universe. Some sprites start evolving, into hand drawn images or something. Fighting breaks out. Eventually, they unite against a horrible 3D race of demons from beneath the earth.

This art is excellent, and I would love to see this happen.

Oho. Yes.

And since Mario moves so fast when running (and it's a bit silly not to run in world 1-1) , I don't think a lot of frames would be needed for the walking animation.

This looks amazing. Finding a codemonkey shouldn't be too hard around here. I like how Mario looks so mean, just like he was supposed to be before the details were possible.

Very cool style, but when you get it playable you might want to add a little atmospheric perspective type contrast adjustment to the background objects; right now it's impossible to tell the difference between background and foreground.

Yeah was planning to have the background objects slightly behind the layer of the foreground objects with a little bit of bluring on em. At the moment I'm just looking to get all the actual drawing stuff done before I worry about that though.

Even if you don't make a game, that would be awesome on a Teeshirt.
