All these lowpoly cars we've been getting lately really make me want to make a sandboxy little city thing for them to drive around in

Perhaps I'll give it a go sometime. Right now, I don't really have time, I mean I should be studying and not lazing around on the forums anyway :D

This are some very low poly car models I made some time ago, I was inspired by Tennis 3D models. i really really like the skins for these! is that shaders or just texture work? I am yet to attempt skinning any of my models, can anyone point me towards a tutorial or anything? I am more interested in that flat style than detailed textures etc

All shading was manually painted on the texture: The way I did the texturing isnt very practical though, I just draw parts of the model in an image, then assign it manually for each face.

You could almost do the whole thing as a cube map, especially for the second car ... Hmm, I would like to see a tool that's basically just a pixel editor for the surfaces of models + the ability to resize and re-orient pixels locally. Does that exist?

I like it! I would use an alternate scaling method, so the pixels don't look so blurry. I'd rather have blocky than blurry. Also, the texture half way down just doesn't fit with the rest of the model. I'm not sure why, but it just seems off.
Design is pretty great though. I also just realized it's a chicken, which amplifies the greatness tenfold.

Really I just meant something that lets you edit the model's texture with nice pixels without messing explicitly with the UV map -- I didn't want to change the actual geometry. I'm not sure how a zbrush 8bit would work ...

yes .. you r right .. but this depends on the game style ... i hope i can show some in-game screenshot for this character and you will see that it is really not that bad-textured thingy

I'm not sure how a zbrush 8bit would work ... Hm, but in 3d you always have to consider how the surface of your model will unwrap into a two-dimensional texture. Perhaps it could work with very low-poly models if the software internally just maps every surface to its own area on the texture map... I'm not so sure.

I'm not sure how a zbrush 8bit would work ... you mean to paint on the model directly? There are many, tatoo for example (I remember seing a freeware version too. But generally after trying, I find these program less useful than just fiddling on the texture, but that's just me.
