i have two versions in my head:

small, minimalistic, doable silhouette version:

super early undetailed mockup

and then i have a bit more grandiose idea.  we'll see about that.  i shouldn't have bumped the thread with the bit of crap above - but oh well too late because i'm about to click the post button and

oh also the little lanterns will be animated as to swing in the wind.

any ideas on what to do for the glow of the lanterns?  alpha stuff?  gradients?  any ideas at all?  please let me know.

This is what I saw in my mind when I read your idea: Auto-scrolling screen, the little guy has trouble catching up with all the obstacles; at times he almost loses his footing, but he manages to keep going. Eventually, he stumbles and is left behind. The screen fades into black and the music gets louder. Credits/title screen appear. I like this.

thank you agj!
also very late thanks to everyone else for nice comments and criticism.

i threw this together in 2 or 3 minutes, so it's really rough.
it has to do with the grandiose version.

yuck.
