I'm currently working on a game Mystic Mine with a (IMHO) cool new concept, and I wanted to know what you guys think of it. It's using old-school isometric tiles, but placed so that they form an impossible structure. It's hard to explain in words, so here are some screens:

The optic illusion allows you to always go down. What do you think?

Ooh.  That would be original, provided that gravity played a role in things.  Does gravity play a role in things?  (I take it that you know of Echochrome?)

(there's a part of the lower-right corner of the first picture that hurts my eyes, but otherwise I think your visualisations work really well).

What do you have in mind goal/objectiveswise?

Simply awesome! I hope you make sure that going downhill is key to gameplay.

Yes, gravity will play an important role: it makes sure you can only go downhill Wink.

Visually, didn't they do something like that in Diablo 2? Having gravity matter will make all the difference though.

I don't think so.  At least, I don't remember them doing that.  Maybe towards the end of the second act, but then again, it didn't really do anything then.

The Arcane Sanctuary is specifically what I was thinking of. IIRC 3 of the 4 branches had different optical illusions in their paths. Unfortunately, I can't find a single decent fucking screenshot online, so I can't demonstrate it.
They didn't do it with slopes though, so that's another difference.

Yeah, they just slammed columns that matched slightly the illusion (height had no effect at all on that game), but taht was pretty much all.

I love the idea, but making the illusions work properly with gravity is sure a lot of work.

I love that it's "MC" Escher, because it sorta sounds like he's a rapper from the 80s.

Oh, and he wasn't actually the guy that invented impossible images, it was really this Swedish guy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oscar_Reutersv%C3%A4rd

Elf water indeed  Gentleman

I didn't know of him either until I stumbled upon his wikipedia page, I think in that brief phase when I was exited about echochrome.

It's fun just to try to figure out if there's a path through these maps where you can touch every square (like Q*bert) while only going downhill.

It's a great idea! Echochrome is the closest I've seen to this, and yet it's still different. Will you make some manner of level editor? I'd love to play with one.
