First build up! Basic movement/jumping/roping Try the current builds conveniently in your browser by clicking here: Version 0.1a- Only one action key which serves as both jump/rope, depending on context
- Rope behaves a little like a bungee
Version 0.1b- Seperate action keys for jump and rope
- Rope behaves a little like the ninja rope in Worms
Version 0.1c- Like version 0.1b, but: Jumping with upwards key, rope with action key
I'm pretty late to the party, so there's no time to lose! Read fast! Here's a breakdown of my concept: - Two player versus game. Local multiplayer of course.
- Each side of the screen is a symetrical mirrored steep rock slope that the corresponding player must ascend.
- The camera scrolls as fast as the faster player ascends. If you leave the screen, you're out (or respawn with a life lost)
- The players can grapple the wall, slowly slide down and have a limited grappling hook for the ceilings of cliffs.
- The players also have dynamite which they can throw at the other player. Or his mountain. Which will result in falling rocks.
- Oh, and the player can jump over to the other mountain if they come close enough to each other and try to block the other players way.
Q: Will you be able to do this in the remaining time? A: I dunnow! I'm pretty busy at the moment actually, but what I lack in time, I'll make up in motivation. That's how it works, right? Q: Will there be pretty images? A: Nope. I'm a programmer. Maybe I'll talk to artist friends later though.

Thanks, I'll need the luck! The most ambitious part isn't the game itself, but the fact that I don't actually don't have any time to do it. (Which will, as always, probably be more of a nuisance than an obstacle.)

I don't actually don't have any time to do it.
Looks like a double negation to me so I expect this game to happen.

Just proves that I don't even have time to proofread my own posts

This is a lot harder to make feel good than I expected. Time for the first build! Click here to try the first build in your browser: Version 0.1aControls: - Green Player: E, D, S, F, Action/Jump with Tab
- Red Player: Arrow Keys, Action/Jump with O
You can: - Jump higher by pressing the action key longer
- Hold to a wall by pressing yourself towards the wall
- Wall jump by holding to a wall and pressing away from it and jump at the same time
- Hold to the ceiling by pressing up when touching the ceiling
- Sloooowly brachiate on the ceiling by pressing left and right
- Attach a rope to a wall/ceiling by holding the action key while standing still - and then letting go of the wall/ceiling.
- Make the rope shorter or longer by pressing up/down
I have to admit that I'm not sure if I like what's currently going on there and if sticking to the original plan is a good idea. Hmmm.

good start but its quite difficult to control, which i guess may reflect the difficulty of climbing

Which are the difficult parts? And what would make it easier for you? (I'm not sure if the controls should be the hard part )

I've tried to introduce a second button. Which version do you guys like better? (Is the second version easier to control?) Version 0.1a- Only one action key which serves as both jump/rope, depending on context
- Rope behaves a little like a bungee
Version 0.1b- Seperate action keys for jump and rope
- Rope behaves a little like the ninja rope in Worms

well i finally managed to get to the top with version b, and btw i also climbed up and out of the world via the wall on the side as for controls .. i'm not sure. i kind of would like the climber to remain attached to the wall unless i press jump. and this may not be a real climbing thing, but i'd also like to be able to do an indiana jones move and deploy my rope when i'm near (but not touching) a wall. also the level probably isn't a great test level, as i assume that kind of maneouver where you flip up and around will be the most tricky?

Very nice idea, but I think the controls are a bit counter intuitive. Perhaps you could try simplifying the 'up' or 'jump' functions by making them sort of 'context sensitive.

well i finally managed to get to the top with version b, and btw i also climbed up and out of the world via the wall on the side Haha. Enjoy the freedom, it won't be so easy when you have an endless mountain! as for controls .. i'm not sure. i kind of would like the climber to remain attached to the wall unless i press jump. Gotcha. I'll try it out later to see how it feels! and this may not be a real climbing thing, but i'd also like to be able to do an indiana jones move and deploy my rope when i'm near (but not touching) a wall. How would you like to control this? Also - won't this make it too easy? also the level probably isn't a great test level, as i assume that kind of maneouver where you flip up and around will be the most tricky? You mean because that part is too hard? Ye, I agree, it was mostly for me to test the control mechanics. Once these are tight, I'll work on a better playing environment!
@Mallus: Try this one? Version 0.1c- Like version 0.1b, but: Jumping with upwards key, rope with action key
Oh, and thanks for trying out the prototype, you two! Much appreciated!

Excuse me, I... I don't understand how to play I prefer the control scheme of version 0.1c but I don't get how to climb up (I tried every key combination )

Oh! There is no climbing (yet) - right now it's more of a platformer. (I'm not sure how to insert straight climbing without making it too easy.)
Do you know what wall jumps are, maybe from other platformers? Try to touch a wall while in the air, and then press away from the wall + jump at the same time. (For example: Touch a wall to your right, and then immediately press LEFT and UP.)
Do multiple wall jumps, et voilà, you're "climbing"!

Yeah, sorry, I was using the red player and wall jumping was useless because the walls are too distant Now with the green player I'm able to climb

version c is alright too, actually got to the top easier, but it still feels a bit awkward. but maybe if you freeze the controls for now and build the rest of the game..

I'm still working on this, but there's no way I can finish it on time Might do it later, though, if the prototype feels right!
