Now the next step is to add more functionality to this animation system. Instead of frames you should implement calls to a notify function. I just did that and it's awesome, it just opened a new world of possibilities in my framework (if you see what I'm talking about). It's like a mini script languages based on animation time. you don't just call the animation when it's their time, the animations call the code!

I'm not 100% sure what you mean, but if you are talking about animations being able to call code, then I already have something like that. Each frame not only has its own delay and related sprite, but also can store a related piece of code that gets called on that frame. It's, for example, used to control the speed of creatures while they walk (so the movement is less linear and fits the animation), to create dust particles on steps, to call supporting animations or effects - stuff like that.

Yeah I just finished my system, it's brought a lot to the table for me. I couldn't imagine doing a game like ArcMagi without that.

Ha ha! I found a scene from the 1963 movie "The Raven" that served as a direct inspiration for MAGI/ArcMagi: It's fantastic :D! I barely remember it, because when I was a kid I was scared shitless of that film .

I like the music, but it feels a bit too "epic" for me. That could fit the game's style though: I prefer more peaceful, atmospheric, slower-paced music, with less percussion, over exciting, rolling, epic, quest-like music.
You'll have to wait for the full soundtrack then. The demos in the first post are one battle theme (a gritty, epic one) and a menu theme which we decided needed to be big and sweeping. The only other one there is a small theme for the witch. I'm not sure how much else I can say about the rest of the music as Tom hasn't announced any other arenas. Well, he did show the strange dimension/warped reality one, which will have a very atmospheric/electronic/ambient track. Each battle track is different, some more epic than others and backing up the stages they go with. It's quite exciting! The full soundtrack is 30+ tracks so I hope there will be something you like.

Just wanted to say that I admire your dedication, and what you've got here looks really impressive. I'm really looking forward to playing the finished product.

Sure. Though, the game I'm working on at my day-job is entering the hectic pre-release stage, and as a part of the ArcMagi team is also working on it, we don't have much free time. Sorry guys, gotta make a living somehow . I'm developing it slowly whenever I get a chance, but don't really have enough time to post about everything. Especially as I'm not doing anything that looks exciting on screenshots - working mainly on the game's structure. Well, there's this first screenie from the character selection screen. I already posted it on the "Today I Created" thread though.

i still think the hair there looks too 'pasted on' and could use some shadows under it, something to connect it to the face and give it a painted look

That's probably because it's the same image I've shown you last time and it's still unfinished just the same . Layers won't be so obvious when it's finalized. Apparently you're too good for Lorem Ipsum. I should start writing haikus and publish them only through design mockups .

May I ask how the HECK did you manage to be so awesome?
Now seriously, the quality of those graphics is just TOO much to take. Aargh. I've been humbled to the point of Emasculation.

Thanks, but that question should go to the artists. I'm only putting their wonders together .

They frequent these forums so I'm sure they'll be happy to read your comment . The sprites and backdrops are by Lurk, character designs by Kate (Dormouse on TIGS), that large witch portrait is by Vinegar.

Yes, the game's still going and it won't stop. I'm investigating an opportunity to be able to work on it much more. And for some mandatory eyecandy - character sketches:
