Cool! I love how smooth stuff is moving, despite the mechanics being turn based. With special event like this, maybe a short animation would add to the immersion? Or the text could be accompanied by illustrations of a style you might expect to find in an adventure log.
We definitely want to add more elements to those events such as pictures or animations to improve the immersion and make it less "technical" - we have a couple of ideas for this which might go way beyond a static image (which would also help a lot). However, since this stuff is rather production heavy we focus for now on the pure bare-bone of those interactions, which is text and the actual actions the player is able to take.
Question: Have you been thinking about disease? As a westerner who recently moved to a tropical country I've had my fair share of this, despite this being the 2000's and that you can buy a bottle of evian literally everywhere. I have no idea what exploring in the 19'th century might have been like, but I have a feeling that adventurers that had to drink river water would not feel we made their endevours justice if illness was not represented in some way...
Absolutely! Diseases and sickness was a big problem for the explorers of those times, and as you say we need to have this part of our gameplay. While we have nothing of that in place yet in the game, we have a lot of ideas for different sicknesses / status effects of units. This can range from a mere cold that will hamper the unit for some time or up to a full fledged viral disease that can actually spread among your units if you do not react accordingly. We'll be tackling this in the future.
On to some other updates!
We've been working a bit on improving our world generation for one of our biomes, called the "Drylands". The Drylands is a biome that is likely to be encountered very early after the player leaves the rather exploration-friendly "Grasslands". While not super-deadly, the Drylands will make it much harder for the player to keep morale up and get enough resources to keep his trek running. Also, there are rumors that zombies can be found in the dead jungle fields.
Here are some example generations of the Drylands, keep in mind that all tile graphics are still WIP:
