The Rules: -I (the host) will provide a theme for the challenge. -You will be given TWO WEEKS to compose one song with said theme. -The song must be a new track made for this challenge. -You will post your song HERE, in the official challenge thread. -Other participants will listen to your song. You will listen to other participants' songs. Critique will be had. -A winner will be chosen by the host. -The winner will host the next challenge.
First of I want to say I'm really enjoying the community here. I've only been here a couple weeks and there's so much great stuff going on in every thread. Just about every morning I jump on and check out what's new on the front page of the forum. With it's access to many a sub-forum. Guess it's sort of like an Overworld....... (Apologies for the terrible sugue) -Overworld Theme- Peach's Castle in Mario 64, The House in Braid, the uh, Ocean in Wind Waker. These are just a tiny handful of overworlds with both awesome and fitting music. For this challenge, write a piece that represents your Overworld. Like the Character Theme challenge, the Overworld can be one that already exists in a game or one you create yourself. And it doesn't have to be a happy Overworld with rolling hills and blue skies, make it any overworld you can imagine. Hell*, your Overworld can be the Underworld! Make it something you can interpret in your personal style. Hope you enjoy the theme! Looking forward to hearing the entries, and Good Luck! Final Submissions due by Tuesday January the 1st at 11:59PM *probably the best joke ever.

Anybody care to explain a bit more about what an overworld is? I mean, sure it's that place in between levels, right? That's kind of open ended, I think. No problem with that if that's intended. Just wanna make sure I'm not missing something.

Awesome, I'm actually sorry I missed the last competition.
This one gives a LOT of latitude for creativity. Overworlds can be pretty much anything.

Ah, I really want to do this one. Some of my favorite overworld themes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULyEY_GjSoAIdea: I totally think someone should compile all of this years winning entries, maybe with some bonus tracks as well.

I'm going to try (and probably fail again) to enter a song to this one. It miiight just be me playing accordion rather than an arrangement.

You'll be delighted to know I'm composing accordion music for my game with the intent to arrange it using other instruments. Seriously awesome! I would love to hear that when you are done. I picked one up a couple of years ago, and have been slowly teaching myself how to play it (improperly, I'm sure). Maybe I'll try to throw a little bit into this challenge, we'll see what happens.

Gentlemen, allow me to post the first entry. Traveling the Misty PlainsHope you enjoy listening, looking forward to your music! Cheers, Moritz Beautiful. I love how under water it sounds here and there, maybe that's why it's "misty"? So. I'm usually a lurker around here, and due to dealing with many RL stuff (mostly school) I either don't have time or just too tired (read: lazy) to enter most of the challenges. This time, it's different. Ever since I bought FTL a couple of weeks ago I had been thinking about a hypothetical free-roaming space exploration/strategy game where you directly control your ship and give orders to the crew, and meanwhile I kept coming back to the idea of dynamically mixed overworld (overspace?) score that doesn't change tracks when it gets dangerous or the combat starts, but only bits and pieces fade in and out, adding on top of the core, possibly ambient music. I know, not very original, but I hadn't had the chance to do it properly before, and when I saw the theme of the challenge - well, I knew what I'd do about it. So I made this: http://soundcloud.com/dogacyavuz/siderealThis is a loop around 2:30 long. It's repeated a little more than two times here, to showcase the three layers - ambient, danger, combat. Ambient is always there, and the other two come and go as a simulation of how it could work ingame (combat goes on top of danger though). It shouldn't be too hard to guess which is which. Hope you like it! Looking forward to other entries, this theme is fun.

Heheh, even though my meddling family and conspiring relatives - coupled with the horrible, horrible holiday season - did their best to stop me, I have managed to finish my entry in time. Just as Moritz, I also went with a sort of Eastern RPG-ish sound - dunno why, it just seems to naturally present itself for the Overworld theme. I didn't have any sort of exact idea of the world or rather the overworld, I just wanted to create something that feels elevated, has a somewhat Eastern touch to it and could fit an RPG. Also, it's supposed to be looped (game music, after all). Here it goes: https://soundcloud.com/maverick-denizen/sakura-plateauLooking forward for the rest of the entries, and, eh... happy holidays and stuff.
