i'm a bigger fan of practical sets since they have a certain reality to them, even if it's obviously fake.
I like to think of it as an art form, rather than saying "wow, this is so cheesy because it's not CGI"! Well, duh, all movies are fake, but if you're going to make your movie special effects mostly CGI I'd rather play a video game. ...Not that they'll be any different in another decade. Practical sets are a lot more beautiful in my opinion, too many movies just rely on CG effects to make it look beautiful and its kind of putting a cliché into the effects industry.

Why aren't the pilots inside the giant robots' heads? Seriously, it takes so much away.

Watching it on Blu-Ray, it's hard to tell that it was made in the 60s.

Yeah, when I saw 2001 first time it was actually hard to comprehend that some of the scenes were practical effects rather than CGI. was also clever trick with glass panel. Also, this has some cool effects:

Wait, what!? If the robots really are being controlled via telepresence, then all interest = gone. That's like making Iron Man remote control the suit from his basement! Honestly, a pilot seat, vertical or otherwise, is the only thing that makes sense for a mecha. Standing while operating a mecha makes you liable to fall backwards and break your head if you get hit by anything. It also looks derpy to control a robot like a Kinect. Even wearing a force feedback suit, it would look like you were wrestling with a ghost. And finally, if your bot fell over, well, good luck trying to match its movements with your own when you're still standing up.

Giant robots: 60 points Giant monsters: 10 points + from the depths of the sea: 20 points Pilots not inside the robots: -20 points Rocket punch: 30 points
Also, every nation has it's own robot, we have Russian mecha, Chinese mecha and so on. That's pretty cool too.

The basic idea behind the film is terrible: Giant monsters come out of the sea. We build giant robots to fight them. And that's it... It'll probably be like Power Rangers was - with every episode ending up in a fight between the giant Ranger robot and another one in an appalling cardboard city
