Looking at this again, I think it actually could be pretty sweet, but a little ridiculous... Must have been a bit cranky when I first saw it.
Annoying that they put GLaDOS in the trailer and then didn't put her in the film...

I have this hunch that this movie will be for Kaiju/Giant Robot movies/tv-series/etc what Once Upon A Time In The West was for Westerns: an epic love-letter to a genre that is really strongly tied to one specific culture by a genius foreign director, so mythic and fantastic in scope it will elevate it beyond it's own niche and show the mainstream why this is an amazing genre that deserves respect on its own terms.
Even if it doesn't live up to that expectation (and I expect it won't) I'm going to enjoy the hell out of it.

The basic idea behind the film is terrible: Giant monsters come out of the sea. We build giant robots to fight them. And that's it... It'll probably be like Power Rangers was - with every episode ending up in a fight between the giant Ranger robot and another one in an appalling cardboard city
