Hey everyone. I am working on a 2d puzzle game right now. The premise is you must navigate through a level and "paint" all the tiles. you can only stand on a tile once so you must find the path that allows you to paint every tile on the board. here is a quick mockup, I am really having trouble with backgrounds though. I just do not know what to do. Edit: ignore the tube, its for character size reference and perspective

I really like the idea, especially if you pull it off well enough visually.
For the background I think you should do really watercolourey landscapes, in a very quick, swashy japanese-ish style.

Yeah, actually, for the background I'd go with a watercolory texture, with some shadow here and there or something. If not, it could be something abstracted, possibly blurry (as per water spreading the ink), with no contour lines and consisting of big areas of color, big shapes. Another alternative would be to create several non-walkable tiles that would make a scenery and a world that surrounds the puzzle, like with trees or something like that.
It's looking great so far. I like the simplicity of the gameplay, and the aesthetics are quite pleasing.

I agree about the japanese style. Maybe it's just the colour thats making me think it, but it would look cool.

Cool idea. I agree that a pictorial background might be distracting. Watercolor textures would be nice. Having color bleed out from the blocks into the background could be a cool effect.

Judging from the demo level you're going to be able to go over the same square twice, so this will be like Q-Bert in that aspect. Gonna be hard to avoid comparisons after that.

wow thanks for all comments, I am going to try and mockup a background of abstract ink wash. so we will see how that looks.
guesst: you can only stand on a square once, once you step off of it you can not step back on. think more Pyramids of RA. I might add squares that need to be stepped on twice or more but I am not sure.

Well am I just being retarded or is that level impossible to beat then?

Maybe you can paint squares next to the one you're standing on?
Oh, and I quite like the second background.

Well am I just being retarded or is that level impossible to beat then? If the squares he walks on becomes red it's a very easy level... Or is there something I'm overlooking?

Yeah I am failing to see the impossible part of the game, which is scaring me. (yes I know it is impossible to complete the mockup)
Also any more thoughts on the backgrounds

I'm pretty sure that one of the tiles in the middle that form the square will always be impossible to step on if you cannot step back on red tiles.

I like the new texture on the background. It would look good with something kinda like the mountains in the second background mockup.
