it could be that there's actually two vertices there and you haven't generated the sphere properly. draw the sphere in wireframe without backface culling on and check that the whole things is there.

Ah yes good suggestion. I reviewed the number of vertices that were being rendered and it was indeed double the amount expected for the current level of subdivision. My original subdivision algorithm I think creates copies of each vertex for some reason...which makes sense for the vertices on the edges of each quad since they arebeing shared . In my current algorithm I have two loops: one for the side columns and then one to render the new vertices in the center.   Can you suggest a simpler way of sub diving a quad?
