Only been to last year's jam, but we completely packed the place (it's a smaller spot), so I would indeed let them know in advance. As for the length, it will depend on the day and when/if there is a big party that night.

Wednesday is out due to the IGF awards and the Wild Rumpus. Monday evening is also a bust, as there are all kinds of things going on then, though earlier might work better.
I'd advise earlier in the week rather than later, and maybe not-super-late. Monday, Tuesday or thursday right after the conference closes might work well.

I think as long as you say that you are hosting this, the word can be spread at GDC. Seriously. The art jam at first was like "hey lets go eat at denny's and draw stuff" and then somehow 70 people showed up.
Last year, the art jam was people coming to just draw stuff or get out their laptops to show off and play test projects with each other. Just a low key show and tell & jam environment with lots of milkshakes distributed.
The turn out was every seat in denny's was occupied.
I think the ones in previous years started around 7 or 8pm, I forget what day of the week they were though.
Definitely notify denny's before hand.

I  Jam.  We're debating what day to do our Ludum Dare gathering, Tuesday or Wednesday, leaning Wednesday as my cohort Phil has something Tuesday. I'm totally looking for something to do on Tuesday.  |

Thursday worked out really good last year and I'd push for having it Thursday again. It was really nice having a more chill night of hanging out and drawing and milkshakes after 3 days of off the hook parties.

Well, I HAD no plans for Thursday.  Why do I get the feeling there might be more than 70 there this year? Hopefully there are wall sockets. (maybe somebody should bring a surge protector or two?)  |

There wasn't much power available last time so I'd suggest bringing some paper if you're planning on being there longer than your devices battery life Will be keen to attend this Was nice to put some faces to names last time. |
