Grotto Quest (working title)

Making this thread feels kind of dumb because I don't know if I even will be able to maintain focus on the project, yet here it is. Essentially this thread is about me trying to make a game and most likely fail. I really just want to learn some coding and potentially put something out that isn't too ambitious or professional. Expect slow progress and feel free to encourage me along the way.

I used the Grandma Engine for basic movement and collision.

I'm aiming towards a short and simple Metroid/Zelda-like experience. The game will have a minimal plot and is mostly about getting from point A to B, combat, acquiring items, hopefully puzzles and secrets etc. I'd appreciate if you threw some new game titles at me and maybe help me out with some coding questions if they pop up, thanks.

 Kiss

Suggestion, make the background tile better so it's more seamless.

Yeah, I will go back and work on the assets later.

Do you have any suggestions for a new title? Smiley

Looks pretty cute but you sound pretty down about the whole idea though. Do you want to make it or do you just feel like you should but wont anyways?

It's very easy to start something and then then not finish it, that has been proven countless of times on Tigs. I'm just being honest with myself that this might not be any different. I'm hard on myself because that is just the way I am.  Smiley

I think I would need to hear a bit about the plot to come up with some title ideas, title doesn't really matter until the game is finished anyways.

Grotto Glenn, the guy can be Glenn.

This is really cool looking, I'm excited. For some reason I just expect this to be insanely hard, i hope so.

Keep up the good work  Coffee

Minor update

I added...

  • Two directional shooting.
  • Waterparticles (that look better in-game than in the gif).
  • SFX for jumping, footsteps, shooting, gunclick, watersplashes, swimming.

Might not sound like much but it was quite a bit of work and I have now learned a bunch! I'm currently thinking about a plot or just how to give the player enough context. Suggestions?

He is hunting for edible plants that only grow in the underground. Though he's partially an idiot and often eats a plant that "drugs" him, changing perception/mechanics somehow.

It's looking good man! Suggestions:

* particles when the projectile collides with something.
* something for the dude to interact with like:
       +opening the treasure chest
       +shattering the pots
       +npc to talk to
       +monster to attack

Collecting plants and fungi for different kinds of boosts/power-ups could be cool. A nice throwback.

Any story suggestions?

Nice graphics and slick colors. The pots are lit from the front as opposed to the top-left, as the rocks are, and the rocks could fade out more as they get darker closer to the black corners, but it's really cool so far.

Grotto glenn is an exciting archeologist with an exciting job! Clearing out boobie traps for researchers. He thinks hes a genius, but the others just encourage him so they don't get hurt...?

Hmmm.. Grotto Quest. I'd make the grotto home base, the guy looks like an archaeologist, so probably he is collecting stuff. Things he brings back he mostly catalogs, but the catch is he encounters intelligent plant and rock creatures whose business he gets involved in. There would be clues of their existence in the ancient carvings and primitive artwork found within the grotto.

As you progress through the game his base could expand to include more staff who could examine and research samples brought back, or assist in expeditions to bring stuff back. Point is the archaeologist could potentially save the different plant rock creature biomes, or exploit it for glory and funds and possibly his own museum.

Design wise to make that happen, I know metroidvania gets referred to a lot, but instead of finding things that would improve the archaeologist, you could be recovering things that would give choices of additional staff(and with it different skill sets that may provide different answers to problems) and extra home base capabilities.
