Nothing is actually 3D. It's just visual trickery. The pond for example, has a dirt layer under it that changes the x/y that it draws at based on the angle.
Like Notababyelephant said, it has a certain aesthetic/charm to it, but it's also because I don't have any experience working with 3D. I use Game Maker, and this kind of stuff would not be simple if using their built-in 3D support (And GM is primarily a 2D game creation tool anyway). It does have charm! I think powly was on point - it looks 3D enough to effectively be 3D to the observer. I think you should use whatever tool you like to make whatever game you like, but when I see this, I think you'd be talented at 3D. Technically speaking, once you got over the initial hurdle with 3D, you'd be able to make scenes like this in a breeze. They would look exactly the same (you could billboard trees, plants, and keep the aesthetic identical) but the hacking required to make it look how you want would be minimized and you could spend that time instead creating art or design, or whatever is more fun than that. If you're doing it specifically because it's difficult or unconventional then none of the above matters.

Here's a new GIF BTW. Just finished up the bird behavior. I also recently changed the game's base resolution to 384x216 (Old resolution was 320x180).
Wow! I too have been working on a game for the past 4 weeks that is '3D' using visual trickery! I'm not sure where mine is headed yet though.

Not much of a gif (couldn't not share the sweet music) but here's a little early footage of the game I'm currently working on.

yikes two videos in a row, we should probably stick to the topic
I know I committed a cardinal sin, I was expanding on a GIF I posted earlier Hopefully this concept of "wired tiles" will make up for it:

Just slowly adding stuff. Latest additions were the bridge and the tall grass/hedge thing. Trying to think of how I can add more advanced structures like houses and whatnot while still retaining the 3D look well.

@Forstride: love the little details! I keep working on this game, BOOR. I made this really ugly and shitty quality gif some days ago and I thought it would be cool to show it here too!

Man, that's awesome! I don't know if your player character is a stand-in or not, but this seems like a great fit for this procedural animation method I came up with a while back. I've got a working example that the free version of Construct 2 should be able to open. Sorry I don't have a Game Maker version, but the concepts are there and should be easily doable in GM. https://www.scirra.com/tutorials/5010/procedural-character-animation-for-top-down-isometric-games-capxAnd here's what it looks like: http://i.imgur.com/mFsHtp5.gif Not gonna embed because I think I already posted it here several months ago. Anyway, if it seems like a thing you can use, go for it.

I've been prototyping a little dungeon generation thing and it's gotten a little spooky.

Ya know, they call it Bomberman, but it's androgynous asf. I don't even think Bomberman has a sex. It poops bombs for goddness sake. BOMBS!
