No worries, I get why it looked like that; I also missed that Prinsessa was referring to my spelling, which didn't help. If I had been passive agressive it, calling me out on it would have been the right thing, so thanks for staying vigilant to keep the boards friendly!

Anyway, let's close this side-track and get back on-topic... uh.. I actually got nothing to share right now Tongue. Wait, maybe this: if you're into AR, check out Zach Lieberman's twitter feed. He has lots of really cool throw-away sketches full of inspiration.

@cel / cell

TO be frank, they are still spelled both way fairly regularly, wikipedia just picked one.

Ok I don't know how to say this without coming off like a dick and it's super not my intention, but no man, it's super not an either or thing. I've been studying animation for over a decade and the only place it's ever spelt cell is when people misspell it. Hell googling animation cell gets you animations of like blood cells and shit and google asking if you meant 'cel'

Quote
A cel is a transparent sheet painted with artwork, used in animation. The word cel is an abbreviation of the word celluloid, a transparent plastic that was invented in the latter half of the nineteenth century. A common word used in the animation business, the word cel came into the public vocabulary in the 1990s when cels began to be bought and sold in earnest by collectors.

A cell is 1.) a small room used to incarcerate a prisoner 2.) a small room in which a nun or monk sleeps 3.) a hollow area in an enclosed place such as a honeycomb or  4.) the smallest functional unit of a living organism 5.) a nucleus of political activity, usually subversive 6.) a compartment in a battery 7.) in America, cell is used as an abbreviation for cell phone. Cell comes from the  Latin word cella meaning small room, store room, and from the Latin word celare, which means to hide, to conceal. Cell is one of the top one thousand most frequently used words in the English language according to the Oxford English dictionary.

let's agree that cell-shading is the incorrect spelling.

You are not the only one and I was alive when cel shading was invented and discussion about it raged in graphics community, heck I was trying to even convince a programmer to try it before it was a thing and I thought I was the only one to have come up with it (he was creating a 3d file format call .sof). Also most nerd who tried to emulate the style early didn't overlap that much with classic animator they were trying to emulate the style. Label are invented and evolve outside of grammarist context, people are still mad after ludo narrative dissonance (mixing roman and latin root) and metroidvania, and any discussion about RPG is destined to finish in a pitfire. I'm okay with settling one or the another, but historically I remind both being used and were unaware of one winning over the other. It's usage.

Why not toon shading anyway (If you study animation you would know this will start a war of either the "step shading" or the "line contour" qualify as that, being them two practical techniques used to create one entire class of rendering).

"Usage"

Remember, schools tend to teach only one perspective, one truth, there is many other over the world, keep learning.

I actually have no idea what this means. I come from a traditional 2D animation background and honestly kinda suck at 3D. I'm mainly takling about these things.

Anyway this is way off track,
Redoing the Megaman sprites, turns out he has a single frame of animation for the start of his run cycle before the run starts with his leg just a little bit straight vs his normal idle that shows for like 2 frames before he starts running, so that when you do the thing where you feather the directional buttons to move pixel by pixel forward he actually has a little shuffle animation for it. This might be commonly known but I thought it was cool.

Vs his normal idle

In 3d you have to code for adding the step shading and the line contour, both technique get called toon shading or cel(l) shading, but both techniques are not always used at the same time, which create huge semantic debate whether they should be called that way, with some arguing the essence of toon/cel(l) shading being in the contour or the step shading, and then some call cell shading anything that is brightly colored like mariokart 8 which use realistic lighting but use toon proportion ...
