So, what VSTs/Sample Libraries/Plugins did you use most while working on these tracks? The instruments are crisp and they all sit nicely within both arrangement and mix.
Thank you. For libraries, I used a wide range of stuff. Mostly Cinesamples, 8dio & Spitfire libraries. There are some synthesizers in there too a little bit, and for that I still use Massive a lot, just because it's very fast for me to program. For mixing & mastering plugins I use Fabfilter mostly. I know them pretty well at this point. I've slowly been incorporating other things, but Fabfilter is my Go-To for most things.
How was the creative process while soundtracking Unworthy? Did you have a pretty good idea of the sound you wanted, or did you play around a bit to get specific tones and sounds? This is a massive OST; and everything sounds so great! Do you score most of the pieces you create?
I think I had a pretty good idea of what I thought would work for the game and I worked with the developer to make something we were both happy with. As it developed, I tried to keep the music tightly interwoven thematically. I tried to link different locations to their bosses, but also there are underlying motivic/thematic ideas that are spread about the entire soundtrack kind of tying it together. I also think quite a bit about the different colors, orchestration and sounds to telegraph different environments and make certain areas unique. At the same time I try to keep everything as cohesive as possible. Like I think sometime early on I realized for the most part it wasn't really going to be a traditional "full orchestra" kind of sound. It became more focused on strings and choir, but that way I could use other colors sparingly to denote certain areas. I'm really into sound design as well, so I have as much fun as I can in that department.
By score I assume you meant whether I write it out or not? I don't write anything out. When I was younger I would write directly into finale, but for workflow purposes I think it would slow me way down.
Not only is the scoring effective, but your use of atmospheric sounds really makes me feel immersed, and I haven't even purchased the game yet! A great score, very inspiring; more people should know about this!
Well, thanks! Tell your friends! Ha! Glad you like it. You can DM me if you want any more specific info.
