besides which, do you really think people will be able to make a large quantity of decent steampunk games? all that art takes effort you know... for me it's a pie-in-the-sky competition theme, suitable for a full production but not a short term project imo.
Based on the output so far, I think people are able to make a large quantity of decent games of almost any type. Except GNM; pretty sure that idea came from the United Republic of Fail.
It sounds like your idea of the steampunk aesthetic is heavily visual. That's cool, but there are other ways to approach it that demand far less than the quantity and quality of art I've seen around here:
- Zeppelin warfare up in the clouds. Could be a shmup or a 3D version of naval warfare, but you have new problems introduced by the fragility and girth of your vessel.
- Life sim, a la Sexy Beachside Volleyball or dating games, but your character is a Victorian mechanic and has a different set of problems
- Rhythm games: you're a Victorian DJ spinning cylinders for a dance, and you have to time some sort of extremely pixellated visual display (kinotrope?) to the music. Maybe borrow some Connect Four and Tetris gameplay.
- Tower defense, except you're managing a portable difference engine assembly line and you have to install and upgrade mechanical automata to make sure each engine is complete and built with the right features before it falls off the end of the line. Visuals could be entirely boxes and text. Maybe some sort of conveyor animation.
