New Gameplay Video
This has quite a lot of changes, once again.
-New Music manager
-New Music tracks (by me!)
-Added lots of background decoration stuff
-Couple of new enemies
-Level generator shape control (wide/tall level shapes)
-Particle improvements
-XP effect

Let me know what you think!

Anything you particularly like?
Anything that would stop you checking it out?

Cheers!

Nick

Why no one says nothing!? I love ALL, gameplay, graphic style, lighting...this reminds me to Terraria (sorry for the "remind" Tongue but it's true!). And I like the song too,it's in my head now xD

Keep up the good work Smiley What are you using to develop this?

Thanks Man! I don't really see the Terraria similarity but I'll take it Smiley

I'm coding this in Java, using Eclipse for the IDE.

cheers!

Super excited about this game. It looks fantastic Smiley

I downloaded the demo. Started my first game. And IMMEDIATELY was being attacked by a bat. I died before I could even move. Might be worth considering that a "bug"...

Oh, that is pretty rare but it does happen, I'll add it to the bug list

Thanks!

I've uploaded a new build (0.57) of the demo:

http://thedungeoning.wordpress.com/demo/

Changelist (what I can remember)
Game tutorial (shown as hints on first level)
New sound effects and music functionality.
Plunging attack works better.
Destructable objects (bushes, crates) take less hits.
Improved physics and collision.
Fancy smoke on intro screen.
Improved health/stamina/magic bars.
Show health bar etc in menu.
Quick health key (defaults to 'S' on keyboard)
Gui sound effects.
Enemies can be hurt by falling blocks.

Please give it a try and let me know what you think!

I really like this game.

My only gripe is that I'm still unable to cycle items without navigating the menu. This isn't a huge deal, though. Also I'm assuming this will be fixed before the game is released, but the command list in the tutorial and menus seems mixed up between keyboard/controller (or geared towards controller completely).

I suck so it's entirely possible that I just haven't progressed enough to find this, but how do I use magic?

Hi, You will find magic items in crates and dropped by enemies as you progress through the game. I've added weapon cyclel buttons and also a button to quick-use health witch is working pretty well.

Looks pretty fun! Nice work so far. The menus look pretty functional, but I think it shouldn't show you what's in the menu you've highlighted until you actually select it to "enter" it, so to speak. Anyway, keep it up!

After getting some solid dev time over the christmas holidays, I'm getting pretty close to 100% completion :D

I also created a Steam Greenlight page for The Dungeoning and people seem to be liking it, if you are in a helpful mood and would like to see this on Steam, head over to the page and give me a big fat YES

Hi, been playing your version 0.6 demo. Overall I like it, but there are a number of things I had issues with:

  • I'm not liking the fact that walking into the side of spikes and pistons hurts you. Makes sense visually for the bramble bushes, but not the spikes and pistons. Imagine sonic the hedgehog and spelunky spikes.
  • Blue ceiling slime health bar doesn't make sense. First hit takes down a large percentage of it's health, while the subsequent hits take off very little.
  • Some clear and obvious notification of when I can level up my stats. Took me a while to notice that "stats" text was flashing in the bottom left corner. Maybe some notification in the center of the screen where my attention is would improve this.
  • Explosive barrels look like normal storage barrels to me. Make their explosive nature more obvious to new players (by adding a flame logo or red colouring for example). Games like ratchet and clank make it very obvious which crates are explosive and dangerous.
  • Separate game settings menu(such as fullscreen and controls) from the gameplay menu (such as inventory and stats). Its odd to see them in the same place and I didn't even realise for a while that there were any game options. I personally assume escape takes me to the game settings while another button takes to a gameplay specific menu (Similar to how it works in rpgs like Skyrim).
  • Make hit confirm on a knight sfx different from take damage sound effects. When in combat, it is hard to tell whether I'm taking or dealing damage.
  • Maybe add icons or labels to the bars in the top right. Helps us new players out a bit Smiley
  • I don't see the need for destructible blocks that block your path. Maybe if they were part of some sort of puzzle or required a specific tool it would make more sense. At present, all they do is lengthen playtime in a cheap way. Maybe just simply reducing their health so they only take one or two hits will solve this.
  • I'm not too sure how I feel about the hidden falling blocks. Games like spelunky go out of their way to make these threats stand out, however it is a instant kill in spelunky. In your game it chips away from your hp, but it still feels a bit cheap. Maybe have a block type that looks different from normal walls and has random chance of being a falling block. Atm its a big ask for the player to check every ceiling in case it is a falling block. Of course, there maybe a simple visual cue I am missing.
Anyway, that is my two cents. Nothing major, just a number tweaks that I feel would improve the game. Good luck with Greenlight Smiley

I made a video comprised of 3045 screenshots I took while developing The Dungeoning, you can see how it progressed from me just drawing one sprite Smiley

I Collected these screenshots by adding a system to my game that saved a screenshot everytime the game was exited, I could also press a key to take a screenshot in game. To make the video I dragged them all into windows live movie maker and set the image display time to 0.1 seconds.

Check out my Steam Greenlight page if you like it and please help me out with a vote!: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=214637821

NEW DEMO V0.66
Hi, I've just uploaded a new demo to the site lots of tweaks and hopefully fixed the Xbox controller issue on Windows.

Demo link: http://www.thedungeoning.com/demo/

The Greenlight page is going really well so far, thanks for voting, but it still needs a few more votes to push it into the top 100: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=214637821

I am planning to submit the full game to Desura this weekend so it should be available to buy in a week or so.  If I do manage to get onto Steam, I'll provide all Desura buyers with a steam code to add it to their library (I assume this is possible)

Let me know what you think!

I can't move using my 360 pad in the newest version. I can do anything involving face/shoulder buttons, but no movement with the analog sticks or d-pad.
