Hmm.. possibly have the rider crouching forward over the wolf so that only his head is visible? Then you could see most of the unit behind..

I think you need more contrast in the unit art, it looks too dark against the brighter backgrounds to me and some of the detail is lost.

I ended up going with the Flagbearer style rules. You can spawn a Flagbearer at any of your flags, but you forfeit the ability to summon new units at that position until he retreats or successfully captures an enemy flag. I really like the rhythm that results from this.
I've cut the unit roster to a core group of 10 units and have been polishing the interactions between these. I've also cut fog because I am not a good enough designer to dovetail it with the rest of the game but it might come back in a different form.
I've got all of 08's unit art in and it looks pretty dang cool. Next I'm working on a new level format so I can use the tiles, and another pass on the gui.

To fix the problem with sight you could do the following: -Have a movable camera but will probably take forever (example: harmonia online) -Have the ability to turn the camera to a fixed north-south-east-west view, but it might be disorientating -have the cavalry be faded if there is a unit behind it. Hope this helps. Keep up the good work.
