Hello everyone! I am proud to announce the official launch of the videogame JAM based around making games with a GameBoy style. I have had this idea in my mind for a few months now, and really got motivated after seeing the success of Zak Chao's NES JAM and Sh0pie's Fishing JAM. The GBJAM is a JAM were people will be developing games around the theme of GameBoy. To make this so great the rules are very loose and can be seen over on http://GBJAM.net We hoping to get alot of participants. If you are not a programmer or you are a programmer, but not an artist head over to the forums on the site and go to the teamup section where you can list your skills and past projects and than see if someone will decide that they want to team up with you. This is a community project, and I have really tried to base it around that. The official dates for the JAM is over a 9 day period going from July 5th - July 14th.

I know it's an unofficial rule but the part about it being a sequel kind of confuses me. Do you mean inspired by or should it be closer to the original idea? Can the game be totally original?

I know it's an unofficial rule, but "Make a sequel to a GameBoy or Nintendo game" doesn't sound like a good idea. Not only does it stifle creativity, but developers wouldn't hold copyright over the content they produce. If they wanted to continue developing the game post-jam for commercial release, they'd have to reskin everything to avoid IP infringement.

Ooooohhhh... well this is quite relevant to my interests.
Id love to be involved in some way, but am slammed with projects :/ however, I do have a pretty large back catalogue of "real" hardware gameboy music and sfx (for those who might be into keeping authentic), so if there is interest I'd be happy to offer it up for general use on some sort of CC BY-NC thing. I'll post links in a bit.

-I can't make new topics on the forum -Are we allowed to start planning things now or do we have to wait until the start date?

Are actual* Game Boy games allowed as well?
*As in a ROM that runs on a actual system.

Bumping this thread as the jam starts today/tomorrow. I guess it's technically already started over here. The final rules: 1. The only official rule is the game must be GameBoy Themed 2. Keep in the original GameBoy screen resolution of 160px x 144px. 3. Use only 4 colors in your game. This post on the forums has useful-looking advice (haven't tried it myself yet) about making music Game Boy-style.

My entry. Working my way through some of the other entries, as well. Burning Rebellion was pretty cool.
