Hi everybody!

This is my first post here, but I've been a lurker for some time Smiley

We have been working on a mac version of our game Zamby and the Mystical Crystals, it's the first time we've made a mac version so I would really appreciate some feedback, e.g. if it runs at all! :D

Also if it runs sluggish, the controls are weird or anything else is also appreciated!

Mac version download:

http://download.kristanix.com/378267/Zamby-Demo.dmg

We also have a Windows version if you'd rather want to test that instead:

http://download.kristanix.com/zamby-setup.exe

I'll be sure to try it out when I get home to my Mac. Smiley

Is it Universal?

Thanks ravuya!

Yes, however I only got a Mac Mini (PPC) myself, so I haven't actually tested it on an Intel Mac yet, so this is one of the things I'm really hoping works Smiley

It says it is a universal executable when I right-click and choose Get Info at least, and I've chosen to compile as it etc so I'm hoping Smiley

Okay, I have a Macbook Pro so I guess you'll get two birds with one stone. Smiley

Ran it on a PPC MacMini. 1.4MHz The game runs pretty smoothly. The primary text font looked messy, as if it were scaled from a bit map font. Gameplay is well designed. Not my kind of game, but decent graphics and music.

thanks,

It just died on me. I think you might have an endian issue:
Code:
kernelErrorToOSStatus: OSStatus = 15 (error = 15)
Zamby(1085,0xa000d000) malloc: *** vm_allocate(size=2318073856) failed (error code=3)
Zamby(1085,0xa000d000) malloc: *** error: can't allocate region
Zamby(1085,0xa000d000) malloc: *** set a breakpoint in szone_error to debug
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::bad_alloc'
  what():  St9bad_alloc

Trying to malloc 2210.6875 MB seems a tad excessive. You might've read some 'size' uint in the wrong endianness.

Thanks for testing guys! Smiley

@Musenik:

The font is not bitmap, but we had a lot of trouble getting the font not looking ugly with sdl_ttf on the Mac, while it worked perfectly in Windows.

@ravuya:

Ooops, that sounds correct! Do you remember where it crashed, if you managed to start the game and play it, or if it just crashed right after you ran it?

Just crashed at launch. It changed resolution but didn't get further than that.

My own games use sdl_ttf on Mac and PC, and we found out that it was very font sensitive. A lot of free/shareware fonts looked crappy, but more professional ones tended to work pretty well.

ravuya:

I uploaded a new version now, which hopefully fixes the problem you were having. I didn't realize the fact that on Intel Mac's the endian system got "switched back" Smiley

You can use the same download link as in the original post, I would really be grateful if you could see if the new version works Smiley

Musenik:

Ah, so we are not alone! Smiley We tried a few fonts from Blambot.com but didn't get good result from those. In the new version I made our current font not bold anymore, so it looks a little prettier at least.

Plays flawlessly. Nice and fluid, doesn't suck up my CPU and send my fans into a howl. Looks professional grade, for sure.

One thing I was confused at is that the "world map" wasn't displaying my training missions as blue pips on the map.

Outside of that, the gameplay is really intriguing. It's like Sokoban and DROD had weird mutant babies. I'd love to play it some more.

The character animation is also really great, something I don't often see in games at this price point. You guys must have some sort of experience in the past with this stuff.

Thank you so much for your kind comments about the game ravuya! Smiley We've been inspired by games like Lolo for the NES, Dweep and Fitznik. The game has been in development for a long time but it wasn't until last year we finally made the move to make it into a full game like it is now, hiring graphic artists and so on Smiley

By the way, weird that the map screen didn't show your training missions as completed, does it show any other levels as completed after you completed those or simply none as completed?
